The novice network is evidence that a general chat is desired, and imo, they should just add one- but of course make it optional.

The mentors who were governing the channel when I was a sprout had some soft rules. No politics. No religion. No ERP. No advertising. No trolling. Warns and kicks were swift.
Since Sarg used to have a lot of hard content players often chat would be about optimizing the jobs and excitement over new content. I remember also a lot debates over the metagame also but it was friendly banter haha. As a new player I found it inspiring and I wanted to git gud. Mentors never used to kick mentors at all. It wasn't needed. Kickwars on Sarg is a relatively new development. People used to just be excellent to each other and I'm not sure why Sarg stayed classy for so long. I guess it was just the atmosphere the oldbies fostered. But those names are nowhere to be seen anymore except very few. (shoutout to True King. Classy player.)
Haha I don't care about the mount. Looks like a long grind. Not something I'm interested in. I just revoked my mentor crown at the smith. I used to think striving to be a classy, welcoming mentor could change the image of mentors but the downward spiral is too steep now I think. I'm out.
Good take on the matter. I found your post insightful.
That honestly sound hellish. I could see how easily mentors would abuse there self asserted power to kick or tight lip any conversation they didn't like despite it not being against tos whatsoever (show me where religion or politics in nn isn't allowed) the reality is human society is build upon religous and political conversation. Its futile to try to silence or suppress it. When it it turns into a fight deal with it then but censoring it on first mention will only make you look tyrannical and you will loose the respect and eventually even the battle. Just look at china)
I genuinely think you're idolizing a few interactions. Most ppl in the game ger bored talking about parsing and optimisation because content in this game is no longer challenging or enjoyable to parse high in. People trying to enforce nn to be that way are the ones making it worse because of an inflated wgo about mentor and nn in general
You can't set and example of how a person with a certain achievement should behave tbh. Because until gms enforce specific guidelines on mentors that aren't enforced to everyone it's literally pointless and even intrusive.
Jenova's seems to be okay from the times I've been in there as a returner on my alt. Some idle chit-chat, and questions are answered. I'm not in there on my mentor character because of the limit. I usually wear my tradeskill crown instead of the normal crown.
Which is fine. Ish, lol. Sure it'll be x-roads chat, but if the demand is there for it then the demand is there for it. People who don't want to deal with that, which there are absolutely going to be some, can simply opt out (or alternatively general chat is opt in). If you wanted a smaller more controlled chat experience then you're in luck because we already have that.

Actually, when I visited Sargatanas about 2-3 years ago before EW, it was pretty toxic and full of crafter/gatherer mentors. At the time, some new savage raids had just come out and there was the whole Asmongold thing starting. But when I resumed playing there a few months later, it was actually really pleasant.Sargatanas used to have a helpful and entertaining novice network and I was happy to be mentor on that server. Other servers were having problems with their novice networks spiraling into filthy decay but Sargatanas was still keeping to the original vision for the chat in the face of that for years.
In my experience of being in many novice networks, poor behaviour is seasonal and usually just right after a major patch or as a result of events that make all the immature people subscribe, such as streamers playing the game.
Difficult to say whether this is seasonal. Usually it is, but sometimes it's long-term. Still, if you join it in a year they might have got bored with the game or with chatting in there. That's changed. All I see when I connected to the novice network for a long time now is degenerate filth. There is excessive trolling by both sprouts and mentors and it's totally out of check. There are also a lot of players who are constantly steering the conversation to their obsession with fetishes that most people in the chat are not involved with and again this is both sprouts and mentors. The trolling and fetish talk is actively encouraged.
No, there are definitely plenty of great novice networks and as I've mentioned, Sargatanas has had this sort of behaviour in the past and it was just seasonal. They aren't going to be perfect 100% of the time on any world, but some experience long-term problems like this due to a really dedicated player who spends all their time discussing things they shouldn't.One of the last decent novice network chats is an embarrassment. And the crown is embarrassing.
Does having the mentor status force you to watch NN? Huh, I didn't know that.
