That's changed. All I see when I connected to the novice network for a long time now is degenerate filth. There is excessive trolling by both sprouts and mentors and it's totally out of check. There are also a lot of players who are constantly steering the conversation to their obsession with fetishes that most people in the chat are not involved with and again this is both sprouts and mentors. The trolling and fetish talk is actively encouraged.

I hoped some older mentors would help try to reign in the chat. They seem to not be coming around anymore either. If I was a new player connecting to that chat I would assume FFXIV is just full of trolls and furry ERP. If that's the impression you want SE, it's your decision to leave the novice network chats user moderated.

One of the last decent novice network chats is an embarrassment. And the crown is embarrassing.

    RIP Sarg NN.
The problem with mentors is this self appointed mentality they have about what being a mentor is about. Nobody's idea ever really homogines and it creates a tension of others not living up to youre/there expectations. The game DOES outline some basic mentor rules but these are in no way enforable because its etiquette anybody should follow.

All mentor is IS an achievement for being endgame ready on all 3 roles with 1500 commendations taking on average 3 weeks to grind on hlr. Its no great achievement but dementors cannot deal with this sobering reality. They need to constantly feel superior to sprouts and even other mentors. The nn is just a global chat dressed up as a noob help chat. But it's not at all. If it was the information would be correctly sourced, spite kicking wouldn't be a thing and players wouldn't s--tpost in it. Actual gms would be in it . If questions in nn get asked. Generally they get answered and ppl normally don't get berated. They do on my server but it's nn is toxic.

Once you release yourself from these ridiculous mentor expectations you'll be able to grind for your fancy pony and hang up the crown for good in dt. ( you don't need to renew it) I understand this is not the reply ppl wanna see or the truth they wanna face.. but it IS the truth.. because where is square out there doing anything to push it in the other direction. Nowhere. Enjoy ur ponny

The mentors who were governing the channel when I was a sprout had some soft rules. No politics. No religion. No ERP. No advertising. No trolling. Warns and kicks were swift.

Since Sarg used to have a lot of hard content players often chat would be about optimizing the jobs and excitement over new content. I remember also a lot debates over the metagame also but it was friendly banter haha. As a new player I found it inspiring and I wanted to git gud. Mentors never used to kick mentors at all. It wasn't needed. Kickwars on Sarg is a relatively new development. People used to just be excellent to each other and I'm not sure why Sarg stayed classy for so long. I guess it was just the atmosphere the oldbies fostered. But those names are nowhere to be seen anymore except very few. (shoutout to True King. Classy player.)

Haha I don't care about the mount. Looks like a long grind. Not something I'm interested in. I just revoked my mentor crown at the smith. I used to think striving to be a classy, welcoming mentor could change the image of mentors but the downward spiral is too steep now I think. I'm out.

Good take on the matter. I found your post insightful.

That honestly sound hellish. I could see how easily mentors would abuse there self asserted power to kick or tight lip any conversation they didn't like despite it not being against tos whatsoever (show me where religion or politics in nn isn't allowed) the reality is human society is build upon religous and political conversation. Its futile to try to silence or suppress it. When it it turns into a fight deal with it then but censoring it on first mention will only make you look tyrannical and you will loose the respect and eventually even the battle. Just look at china)

I genuinely think you're idolizing a few interactions. Most ppl in the game ger bored talking about parsing and optimisation because content in this game is no longer challenging or enjoyable to parse high in. People trying to enforce nn to be that way are the ones making it worse because of an inflated wgo about mentor and nn in general

You can't set and example of how a person with a certain achievement should behave tbh. Because until gms enforce specific guidelines on mentors that aren't enforced to everyone it's literally pointless and even intrusive.

The funny thing about this is some of those rules are actually an abuse of power. For example, if you got kicked from NN for talking about religion, I'm pretty certain you could report the mentors. Nothing in SE's own ToS makes that a taboo topic and infact it could be considered discrimination to "warn" people over it. The problem with a lot of NN is that self elected friend groups think it's theirs to govern.

The rule to have no politics or religion in the chat is not really made to be a jerk. I usually don't mind as much talking about it on occasion, but it doesn't change the fact that it can be a very sensitive topic for some people. It can result in very aggressive and violent reactions when you argue with someone who won't listen to your point of view for these topics. Now, letting people know to be patient and listen would be a nice long term goal, but there are those battles that won't end with this understanding. Some of us have to learn the tough lesson to simply walk away since the person you're trying to help has to acknowledge that first. It gets nowhere if neither side can admit to any misunderstandings they have for the other person.
