And morrowind? The hell you on about. That shit is pixelated and there is tons of games that is a billion times better in graphics xD
If you cast your mind back ten years to a game that looked good, chances are it’s either highly stylised or has poorly aged. Shaders also can carry a lot of weight. They have said nothing about adjusting tall race walk cycles, cloth physics and the aspects that they’re layering the new paint on which are pretty difficult to ignore. Things are still going to clip, there’s going to be weird suppression of clothing parts and no one will be able to see any of it under the gaudy light show in combat.
I mentioned morrowind because we’ve all seen that nvidia tech demo with the ai upscale/rtx light sources. Although it looked really good, it also still looked like a game released in 2001. Ultimately that doesn’t matter because it has been a good enough medium for the story to be presented through with a pretty consistent and alien aesthetic letting the viewer’s mind fill in the cracks. The ff14 update just looks like they’re aware that a big enough discrepancy between paint and model looks odd but are pushing ahead into the uncanny territory. The scattered stuff around the place -broken stairs, grass etc - looked like a mitigating effort though, I’ll give them that.
