I’m not saying that there are cats that have permanent slit pupils, I’m saying that anything bigger than a house cat doesn’t have the ability to have them at all.

Having the ability to constrict pupils like that is there for night creatures with sensitive eyes (animals like house cats constrict their pupils to a much greater degree than humans) to be able to see better in the daytime and the vertical slit also has something to do with helping ambush prey through the grass or something when they’re constricted like that when it’s light out. But I guess it only helps smaller things or only smaller things hunt like that because tigers and lions and any cat bigger than a bread basket doesn’t have them.

It doesn’t make much sense for omnivorous vaguely cat-ish beings the size of people (that don’t even have forward-facing cat ears!) to have vertical slit pupils. But this is Final Fantasy so bringing science into a fantasy game only takes you so far.
