The most amusing thing of all is, the English language is littered with exceptions. The fact you're so hell bent on this one makes me wonder. What do you think of the rest of the English language?

Also, anyone can tank and heal to an extent. Yet we still call them tank and healer roles. What's up with that?

DPS is an acronym that means damage per second in multiplayer online gaming. It's used both as a noun (a weapon type, class, or a character capable of massive damage) and as an adjective to describe a weapon's capability.

I think the funniest part about this whole thread is that your point isnt even true. The numbers that float on your screen and show up in the combat log are not dps numbers.

Correct. Those are Direct Damage numbers (DD).

DPS is Damage Per Second.
Thats not a role, thats an action/verb.

All other classes are named by their role not what they do in it.

Please change DPS to DD.

Technically, if someone wants to rename DPS they can basically name them useless minion filler because that's all they are. The only people that have a role in this game that involves some task is the tank and the healer.

Albeit, asking for more is basically asking to play a different game from what FFXIV is and will likely ever be at this point. The dice were cast way back after 2.0 hit and they started moving away from things like kiting mobs and cross class job skills. If they took away the need for tanking things and just gave every job all the things needed, so that they were more about what you wanted to play and not about picking a specific nook to drive oneself into, it would likely become something like a tab target version of guild wars 2.

Silly, a tank is expected to tank, a healer is expected to heal, and a dps is expected to maintain a high dps.

I think it's safe to argue that in the context of the game DPS as an initialism is also a noun. I also think it's not worth the dev's time changing it when that time and energy can go elsewhere.
