What's the alternative??? Are there ANY other MMOs in a usable state for the millions of FFXIV players, their friends, and their communities to migrate to? Or do you suggest that they play Fortnite or a single-player game and never talk to people in an online gaming space again? Is that your solution? Just hit the mute switch on everyone?

Some food for thought. FFXI is 21 years old and still around, though essentially in "maintenance mode". There are MMORPGs out there still running that were running before it launched.

However the majority of the playerbase Yoshi-P want's to target with this game is not likely to stick around long term. He's essentially been trying to re-tune a genre based around longevity of content to appeal to players that want to 100% the game in 20 hours and get all their trophies/achievements/gamerscore then go hit the next shiny thing that gains popularity.
There are a lot of games that are still around after a couple of decades but players always dismiss them as "dead" because the player base is a tiny fraction of what it had been at one point.

That's the same thing people are already doing here, except the game still has a majority of the players it had last year when it hit its peak. They're trying to convince readers that the population will be FFXI size by the end of Dawntrail.

As for how he is retuning the game, doing it to please people who want to 100% a game in 20 hours most definitely is not what he's doing. Just ask all the people who have been complaining about trying to catch big fish over in the DoL subforum and the length of some of the other grinds player bring up in the various other subforums.

Many players already feel like this has gone the mobile game route considering the items being added to the cash shop and that it will only get worse. It's hard for any of us to say one way or another because we don't know how much incoming revenue comes from specific sources and how much goes back into the game from those sources.

Why do you assume that people are only interested in migrating to a MMORPG?

MMORPGs aren't the only games that can be played with friends and family, or even strangers.

I can remember talking with WoW friends back when I was still playing it about why they chose to play WoW and what they would play if they stopped playing WoW. The most common response was "I don't actually like MMORPGs. I only play WoW because of " [insert choice of "I played Warcraft" or "I like open world PvP" or both".
