having no shield would make you lose a ton of skill, great sword will be for new job or classThat's... actually not a half bad idea really, it's still technically a sword you could restrict use of a shield with a Great Sword equipped. Great Sword damage could actually be ON PAR with Lances or G.Axes to turn GLA/PLD into a decent DD, and their Weaponskill Limitations and loss of shield skills would keep them from being OP, while giving GLA/PLD some much needed role diversity.
I was thinking it would be useful for times we weren't tanking, like when we get stuck with extra PLD/GLA or two who don't have other jobs leveled at LS events or to help PLD be a more viable choice burning through trash mobs or doing speedruns when tanking isn't an issue. It would still be FAR from ideal but it would give us a few more options outside of our core role. At least that's just my personal opinion.

Why not, we got daggers after all lol.
outmaneuver, shield bash, pld combo, aegis boon, war drum that's 6 skills right of the top of my head you couldn't use, then if your not tanking you wouldn't need flash, cover, hallowed groundI was thinking it would be useful for times we weren't tanking, like when we get stuck with extra PLD/GLA or two who don't have other jobs leveled at LS events or to help PLD be a more viable choice burning through trash mobs or doing speedruns when tanking isn't an issue. so that's 9 skills lost to a glad/pld dd with no shield. doesn't seem worth it.
Save for maybe Shield Bash as a form of stun, we wouldn't be using most of those abilities anyways in non-tanking situations. So why not have an option to increase our DPS when we're not tanking, that's really all I'm saying.

my point is whats the point of having a DD in party with half a skill set. Why would anyone pick a glad over a dragoon for dd.
I think glad should have stances mainly so that you can raise def and shield when tanking and raise attack when soloing.
I agree, like I said though the situations utilizing it would be far from ideal and I know I'm talking about the most extreme cases here to be legitimately using it. Either way I wouldn't mind having a higher DPS weapon option just for such extreme cases. There's no saying we couldn't add other bonuses too having a G.Sword either though, since were sacrificing so much on our defensive side without a shield why not throw something like all WS's become AOE (Conal/360). Half our WS's have us spin in a circle anyways, you could say the extra reach of the G.Sword lets you hit multiple enemies.
Frankly I wouldn't mind such stances either, as long as they give us some true form of mitigation not just another defense boosting JA.
Here's an Idea for a trait.
Last Stand- When HP reaches a critical stage, all forms of damage are reduced by -50% for 5-10 seconds.
Call it a critical save for those moments your about dead and WHM's might not be able to get a cure off on you before the Mobs next attack which could potentially kill you. It won't always save your hide though depending how far in the red you went beforehand, but it gives you a fighting chance.

i wouldn't be opposed to a higher dps sword that can only be used with a low block shield or something. but when you get into these types of mechanics it starts to sound like a new class or job.I agree, like I said though the situations utilizing it would be far from ideal and I know I'm talking about the most extreme cases here to be legitimately using it. The original concept of grad, and in the lore, was that some gladiators may choose to not wield a shield. So when i started i thought there was a stance option for dps or something. Most original game lore has been decimated though and a lot of things don't really make sense anymore.
also if anyone's started a new char as glad, do they still start glad out with no shield( i couldn't find a shield til i was like lvl 20)
Agreed, I've wanted this since the game came out. Whether it's Samurai or Fencer (as the old data mining suggested) or something new, I just really want a DD sword class (preferably a normal sized sword and not a greatsword).
