You get two for free.
And just yesterday I needed 120 skins, 120 wool, 80 other skins and another 20 other skins.
You get 15 items per hour per retainer. Thats 12 hours of sending out your free retainers. Sure that is possible in a day... but come on.
Plus of course the added space on the market board.
If you seriously want to play a crafter you basically have to pay for the extra retainers.
It’s a good thing not to answer your enemies. I scarcely ever do. Perhaps Emily is more like me than I am like myself. Perhaps she would rather not answer her friends, even. She keeps it all in her heart.

You definitely only get two.

Specific text referenced: Your FINAL FANTASY XIV subscription allows you to hire up to two retainers per character without paying any additional fees.
Pay to win is any system where a player can purchase something that is not cosmetic in nature in order to gain an advantage. I would classify the retainer system being that. You're paying for an extra farming chance and storage space (i.e. the advantage) which sub-only/non spending players could not have without buying said extra retainer. By giving the ability to buy more retainers, they're selling additional access to two game features (more retainers for more farming + more storage space) which removes the possibility of it being a cosmetic only purchase.

Three free in all.
By default, you can only hire two Retainers, but you can add up to 7 additional retainers (for a total of 9) from the Mog Station. The FFXIV Companion App also gives you an extra retainer (past that 9 for a total of 10) if upgraded to premium, alongside double Chocobo Saddlebag space.

But to be fair, you have access to up to 16 retainers for no additional fee (assuming you want to do the legwork and/or pay for 3 months at a time).
The price for the standard edition for 180 days is the same as the per-month entry level (12.99 USD) This means you have up to 8 characters, each with retainers.
By the time you hit level 50, you can easily do 1-2 dungeons a week on that side character and trade the loot for venture tokens via GC; by 60 you can solo-speed run them. It takes less than a week casually to get a character here. You shouldn't ever need this many retainers, but the option is there.
To OP: The easiest thing to do is unlock fisher, get fisher to max level via Ocean Fishing and then just send them on daily 18 hour ventures to sell the allagan coins they get. That profit will easily pay for whatever you're having trouble finding in the wilds.
