In other news, there is no technical debt from 1.0.
"We don't have ... a technological issue that was carried over from 1.0, because ARR was meant to kind of discard what we had from 1.0 and rebuild it from the engine."

WoW allowed you to skin killed enemies in open world if you had leather worker unlocked. Would be neat if we had a new gathering class focused entirely on taking items from downed enemies.![]()

Two options:
1. Have a combat retainer. If you don't have one yet, get them to level 10, and then just keep letting them do quick exploration until they level to max, or at the level they need to be for certain materials. That is the best way since they wouldn't need gear for quick exploration. This will take some time though. It depends how often you can check your retainers.
2. Market Board scouting. A lot of players crash the market boards all the time and some materials are so cheap that its not even worth the wait for a retainer or hunting the mobs for them. With DC travel, you have more options now days than before.
I don't really like the idea of more drops being available because we are already dealing with a lot bots at the moment. Even gathering got so bad with their rounds. I get your pain though. I had to do a lot of jumping around for leatherworker and that is why their hides are more expensive than a lot of other materials. I wish you luck.
If you have a friend who is going to be AFK, or willing to sit AFK in the field you're trying to get monster drops from, join a party together, and they will have a chance to get the drops from each of your kills. Used to do this with a friend when we were first outfitting an old FC's house. Got tons of materials that way.

I think the worst for me was trying to make Chimerical Felt when I was trying to craft something. There are only very few chimeras in Azys Lla, their respawn timer is extremely long and the drop dare is painfully small.
That depends on how much you're trying to get. I'm killing those frequently because they're part of the spawn requirement for Leucrotta. Takes about 15 minutes to kill the 50 needed and I'll end up with enough Chimera Mane for 7-9 bolts.
The open world mob drops are a way for players who don't wish to gather or craft to get some gil. SE is highly unlikely to change the drop rate at this point considering the relatively low demand for the drops that aren't part of the most recent expansion. Desynthesis has most leather and cloth bolts going up on the marketboard at very inexpensive prices so it makes even less sense to farm your own. If your concern is needing HQ materials to make a HQ item, ask an experienced crafter for advice. Outside of end game master recipes, nothing should be requiring HQ materials.

This is honestly (imo) a failing of the DoH/DoL system overall, and the Island Sanctuary.
For me there are two big problems:
1) we should be able to use items somewhat interchangeably or convert them around (eg claws, hides, etc), especially from Island Sanctuary, and
2) the devs really don't need to add components for the sake of having new components.
Example: Not counting Chocobo-Coloring-Food, we have 5 different apples in the game.
In the real world, I understand that certain apples are better than others in certain recipes, but there really isn't anything stopping you from making an apple pie with whatever apples you've got. In FFXIV, apple A makes juice, B makes a tart and C makes a strudel. Can't mix and match! Why not a dynamic system where all of them make apple juice, but the iLVL/effects are better with better ingredients?
Or, I dunno, add entirely new ingredients relevant to the expansion?
We've just visited the fantasy equivalent of "India", but there aren't any mangos, durian, pomegranate (despite there being a pomegranate fish...)
More to OP's topic- There really isn't a need for so many different claw/horn/hide/etc, and instead should just be a a generic grade 1-5 hide ("rough hide", "smooth hide", "fine hide", "flawless hide" or whatever); this means you can farm wherever/whenever- as long as you are killing level 90 mobs that have hides, you can get current top-grade hides.
Guildwars does something similar to this, and their crafting system feels pretty good- it's simple, but pretty robust.

you should see if any dungeon gear can desynth into the materials you are after
because unsyncing a dungeon could get you more than just trying to overworld farm
I would like to mention that you can buy these materials from Bicolor Gemstone Vendors if the recipe is shb or ew
