In comparison, the FFXIV glamour system is a chore, because you have to decide whether to keep an appearance for future use, and go through a complex process to save them before you dispose of the items. (Not even sure if this is possible without taking up some space somewhere.)
There's also a huge hurdle FF14 would need to clear first that WoW doesn't have. A lot of WoW's stuff is mitigated by a few factors that make the Transmog log possible. First off is that it only collects and loads appearances that you are capable of using. So only weapons you can equip are saved and only the armor that is meant for your class is saved. So a Paladin can only save Plate gear, shields, and their weapons. A Mage can only save cloth gear and their weapons. It limits the amount of data that has to be stored per character. FF14 this would be an issue since a single character can wear ANYTHING. It would have to be designed to store and load EVERY single weapon and armor item in the game for every character. A tall order to be sure.

Additionally, FF14 has to also hold information on the dye channel which is about to be expanded even further. This makes it highly unlikely, and potentially even impossible, for FF14 to ever have something like that unless the Devs can figure out a way to make it without the huge data store needed.

Don't get me wrong, what we have is not at all perfect and there are probably plenty of ways to do it better. Whether these ways would work with the way FF14 is coded and designed is another story entirely. Honestly with the new dye channels coming out just add pity drops to old level cap dungeons and I'd be fine with the current system. The lack of the pity drops that leveling dungeons have in old level cap dungeons hurts.

Dye information isn't important for a glamour catalog. However, you are right about the problem of having to store data for every glamourable gear piece in the game.

OP: have a read of Thread: Glamour and why it's poorly designed, in particular, my reply which quotes another previous thread where I compared the data requirements, including scalability and future-proofing, of the dresser vs a catalog.

Mao still thinkings Dye and Glam storage systems used by GW2 is gold standard for MMOs. Mao nots sure if FFXIV code even able to adopt such systems but if is, can prove to be HUGE financial boon to SE as Glammings would go into FULL ENDGAME SAVAGE MODE!
