This sentence right here is just inherently wrong. Monetization and fun are inherently linked, not because people find paying fun or not, but because the C-Suite at the game company is incentivized to get you to cough up as much money as possible. Usually this is by doing things like making it so you can't re-earn event items and instead putting them in the shop, or drip feeding patch content so that people stay subbed. Ever wonder why x.x5 patches, with more content, are often a month or two AFTER the main line patch? It's not because they are worried about everyone going through it too fast, it's so they can milk more money out of you that you might not have spent otherwise.

In other words, the developers are actively incentivized to make the game LESS fun if it means making the company MORE profit. And they often do.

I feel like you are trying to badly argue this point. This is a ongoing MMO. Of course they going to drip out content but with this game you know it's coming.

The people who generally don't are the ones afraid to lose some virtual property they aren't using anyways in most cases. The rest of the population got no issue dropping their sub and coming back when they want.

As for event stuff. You don't see very many people up in arms about it hitting cash shop. Probably because they know it's optional and they don't need it with the literal myriad of housing items and whatnot in the game already.

Again...no leg to stand on because if you somehow see a connection between monetization and fun...you probably should quit all video games.

You buy a game to enjoy your way...season pass...monetized..lol. like at least it's not predatory like EA lootboxes or genshin impact ganja or even BDO cash shop

I do not care what he says, because they explicitly design the game in ways that prevent you from taking breaks. So he's pretty much just lying for free PR.

What ways? I can only think of housing, but you can simply get an apartment if you aren't planning to play much.

The entire housing system as mentioned. Apartments are not a replacement for real housing.

Seasonal event items not being re-earnable in game when the seasonal event comes around again.

Tomestone / loot weekly lockouts.

.x5 patches always being 1 or 2 months after the main patch for no good reason.

Island Sanctuary leveling is time gated and can't be planned out more then two weeks in advance.

Relic weapons, for some reason, are always half way into the expansion rather then be there at / near launch.

And that's what I can think of off the top of my head.

And that's what I can think of off the top of my head.

An offline character doesn't need the newest gear. There is catch up gear in every patch and if someone wants the previous gear for glamour it's still there. X.X5 patches have content that one can do when they come back. Island Sanctuary xp is not time gated, you can earn as much as you want. Players who take breaks can complete relics when they return to the game. It's very much possible to resub in X.55 and complete everything that's been released by that point. Getting the newest loot and experiencing content when it's new are rewards for staying subscribed throughout the year, but not required.

Housing and seasonal events are the only FOMO things you mentioned that prevent people from taking breaks, and with the amount of hate seasonal events get sometimes you arguably don't lose much there either.
