I do believe they were referencing the cost in AUS currency. Gotta remember English forums doesn't = strictly USD when it comes to currency.Wait, what? I play $12/mo or whatever the lowest thing is. 3 months would be $36 and four would be $48. $50 if we want to ballpark it. And if you want to take the $40 box price and divide by 6 (X.0 and then X.1-5 patches over an Expansion cycle), that would add like $6-7. So say $60 a patch?
If you're buying more than that, I would think you WANT those other things/other functionality. If you didn't, you wouldn't be paying it. One would think.
Fair enough, but then it's a good idea to define it like AUS$<number> or $<number> AUS, just as people do with CAN$/$--- CAN for Canadian dollars. The US$ is world reserve currency, and the US is far and away the largest English/Western nation state in terms of economy (top three in the world overall national economy by scale), and the world reserve status means most people are at least marginally aware of how much their currency is worth in US$ and when "$" is used with no qualifier, it's thus assumed to be US$/USD.
It would also be nice had the OP said "That's ~X in US dollars", since it being a common trade currency means it's a common reference point for others to quickly get into their own currency; like a person in England would be aware that a US$ translates to about half a Pound, give or take, for ballpark napkin math.
So while it is true that English doesn't = USA, it should be obvious that "$" said in an English setting with no qualifier is going to be assumed to be "$ US" unless specified otherwise.
It'd also be nice if the OP put into words what this translates into - Opportunity Cost, to use the technical term - for what they could buy with that instead. As I (and also CStrife912, using Pounds) pointed out, it's roughly the cost of going to see a movie (if one buys no drink or snacks) or going to a diner/fast food place and ordering a meal.
.
The underlying point still remains:
If you're still paying it, it's worth it to you - and it really is a bargain compared to how much everything else costs these days.
If it's not worth it to you...why are you still here?

Some people want to be mad. They don't want a solution. Just mad. Mad is life for them.
