I watched someone have a mental breakdown in the Gold Saucer last night and that was well worth my sub for the month.

Even if the author of the thread really exaggerates things, he still has a bit of truth in his words.
Even if nothing forces you to have a subscription unless you really don't want to lose your house, the patches 6.1 to 6.4 were terribly poor. It was already a loss of PvE content between Stormblood and Shadowbringers, but with Endwalker, yes, the patches became much less interesting for once.
And yes, the patch delays went from 3.5 months to around 4.4 months, especially for patches 6.3 and 6.4 where the delay was particularly long for relatively weak content in the end.
Nothing, my sub is running out (or already ran out who knows) and i wont bother with the game until 7.0 IF they show that they are willing to actually put effort into the game. I wont even bother to resub to grab the housing demolition gil.
Paying $9/mo or whatever after my retainers add up to is cheaper than buying a new game each month by 6-7x over.
I can't afford NOT to be addicted!

I don't want to play an AAA title using a character that isn't mine, wearing ugly gear I can't customize the way I want. I like this combat system with three roles and a global cooldown and action bars. The music and art style are beautiful and the game feels like a fantasy world. I like having a house and being able to gather and craft things. I also enjoy having collections of mounts, minions and titles that keep expanding with regular updates; many other games are one-and-done. I like playing in a world with other people running and chatting in it and experiencing new content with them. Most importantly, I really love the story.
That's what I'm paying for.
FFXIV's $13 a month is easily excusable considering that it's easier to use than Second Life and VRChat for [redacted], which are both free but highly complex. One can [redacted] and [redacted] with great ease, and the UI for [redacted] in FFXIV is much smoother and more intuitive. I've tried both alternatives and SL is dead and VRChat is too janky. Square Enix's "blind eye" has been a second wind for FFXIV and it's a boon for artists and [redacted] creators.
If you're actually expecting a video game here though, that's just sad.

It's cheap now but Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen might be a good fit for ya. You can create both your character and main pawn. You can mod in new clothes if you don't like the base clothes.I don't want to play an AAA title using a character that isn't mine, wearing ugly gear I can't customize the way I want. When you deal with human beings, never count on logic or consistency.

I pay because I enjoy the game enough to keep paying. I can log in for a couple of hours, run a few roulettes, and then log off when I don't feel like continuing today. I've taken a few breaks, but so far I've always come back.
I like raiding, and I like playing with my friends. My friends play this game, so I play this game. If they all quit for good, I'd probably do the same. Either that or I'd only play every once in a while to clear savage whenever a new tier drops.
Invite me to the next one, sounds like good entertainment.
I dunno why but I just imagined Jennifer Love Hewitt spinning around in circles, arms outstretched, and screaming "What are you paying for huh? What are you paying for!"
