Housing and older content that I'm still reclearing. I've done every quest in the game outside of MSQ, maxed all my BTs, slowly farming up most of the older mounts(up to ShB right now), working on getting a set of all older relics, and just general achievement hunting.

I probably have enough to keep me busy with catching up but if 7.0 and 7.X+ doesn't have a lot of filling content then I guess it'll be over.

Personally i would say no, its not.

The realization that a 10 year old MMORPG is no longer worth your while shouldn't be earth shattering. I've dumped plenty of MMORPGs over the years. There is no shame in going out to find something new. Or even ... suspending a subscription for a year or two to go explore what AAA games you can play now that your time is not sunk into an MMORPG.

For me, the monthly fee is less expensive than going to a single movie theater showing. Even if it only provided 3 hours of entertainment a month, that would be more than enough to justify paying the subscription. Of course, I get a heck of a lot more than 3 hours of entertainment out of this game in any given month.

This game should not be a job. There isn't a requirement to play each and every day of the year (or even each and every month of the year).

When it ceases to entertain, and you're trying to determine if it's worth the continued cost, it may be time to let it go.

This is a misconception that you pay your subscription for the patch content. The patch content is incluced with the base game and expansions. When you buy the Endwalker expansion all future patches of that expansion are already included in the price of the expansion.

You don't had to pay a sub while a patch released to get access to the content of that patch later on.

So the literal answer to "What are you paying a subscription for?" is:

You pay to get access to the game. Everything else you have to pay extra for. (And without paying the sub you will lose access to that extra stuff which you have already payed for)

Well me personally I have a small FC with people I like a lot, I enjoy grinding stuff and especially fishing. I am doing Eureka again, have still things to do in Bozja, have a handfull of rare fish to catch, have to finish Eureka Orthos, crafter relics from ShB and EW, fates, leveling jobs, doing Diadem for the Pteranodon, clearing ShB ex trials for the mounts...

The list goes on and on.

Sure I am unsatisfied as well mostly because of the poor execution of the relic quest and the lack of incentive to do Criterion Dungeons - which I also have to finish still.

But even after 26k hours logged in the game, I am far from running out of content.

For me it's getting the plot 11 in Lavender Beds. There is currently one open right now for the next entry phase.

If I don't win this time with my shell of an FC, I will just quit this game until 2 weeks of the next expansion release to catch up on whatever bs I have to.
And if 7.0 doesn't bring anything new to the table, I'll probably be gone for good.

Here's what I pay my sub for:

1. Playing the story a bajillion times over because I like it. I play New Game+ a lot
2. Hanging out with friends I have made from all over the world
3. Progressing and gearing my character which I enjoy
4. MAP NIGHTS!! (A fun time for my FC as we get dumb and just have fun)
5. Retainers - I probably dont NEED as many as I have, but the extra space is handy.
6. Quality assurance and paying my share of server space. I know full well how much servers cost to run and maintain.
7. Friendship. I have played since 1.X alpha and this game is a part of me now with all the friends I have made (and some who we lost) from both FFXI and FFXIV. Im very introverted and if it wasn't for the developers of these two games, FFXIV and final fantasy XI before it, I doubt I would have met such awesome friends nor my spouse whom I have been married to for over 10 years now.

For how often I play this game and what I feel I get out of it. Its worth the subscription fee.

I found much enjoyment just from 6.0 to now. It wasn't really until recently that I ran out of things that I wanted to do. That's well worth "AAA titles" in my opinion. But that's just me. I used to be more of an "MSQ then raid, then unsub" type player. Back then, I'd probably sub for 2 months, unsub for 4-6, repeat.

I will say in recent times, I find myself playing other games - TotK or some other titles I picked up on the switch. And I'll likely unsub just long enough to not lose my house.

"What are you paying a subscription for?" - I've been subbing since I joined XIV in October 2019. I'm online every day for an average 5 hours of active playtime (6-8 with AFK, lol). After I finish the patch content, I always do my daily roulettes, I only set up my IS workshop for 1 day and I don't automatize it so I can visit every day to take care of my plants/animals because that's more fun. I try to do all my weekly challenges, gather/craft/do leves every day because I'm a Gil hoarder, spam FATEs for Bicolor Gemstones and sell the rewards for Gil, hoard other currencies, solo treasure maps on my WAR alt, jump on Hunt trains, redecorate/hang out at my houses/apartment/private chamber, currently (still) slowly grinding lvls in Eureka because one day I want to get that Ozma mount, etc. My main RDM's Tome gear set is not done yet, I still have a few weeks to go. I also have to re-learn some dungeons/boss fights that were reworked because of duty support. D: So yeah, I'm never bored in XIV.

"So i guess thats still $220/patch" - Some people spend more on drugs and alcohol, I'd rather buy pixels. *shrugs* I'm having fun and not hurting anyone so money well spent!

I've never been on hiatus.
Longest break I've been is 3 weeks. Sometimes, I will be gone for a week or two.
I work from home and sometimes I'll just be on just because it's available. Completionists have a ton of stuff to do.
