Are Mentors seen as unhelpful?

Honestly I've never gotten my mentor crown again after they changed how you get it, and an interaction with a ''''mentor'''' back on Odin made me never want it again.

Was ST and WoD with a new person, in a mic call, with two other people (One of which kept trying to push me to get the mentor crown). The mentor didn't want to explain anything to the new person, so I started to. Only took them 1-2 boss fights before they began interrupting me and complaining that I'm 'overloading the new person' any time I tried to explain the simplest mechanic.

Like, I've had people in 24 man runs tell me to shut up when I'm the only one explaining mechanics to new people (Happens the most to me at Thunder God Cid... you guys remember the pain), and I'm just wondering why so many people get the loudest, in a bad way, when people are trying to help other people.

I roll my eyes any time I see the mentor crown on someone, cause they're always the last ones I expect to give helpful advice.

Did they ask for help or did you just start trying to spoil mechanics for them and prevent them from learning on their own. As a Mentor myself I cannot stand when people spoil fights for new players. IF they are struggling ask them if they want help first instead of just rolling off all the mechanics. It takes the fun out of the game and try and put yourself in their shoes. Would you like someone spoiling all the mechanics for you the first time you enter a fight blind?

im a mentor for quite a while now. aside from helping in content, what just happens if you're in a group which needs help, i've never been in a situation i needed to help... and if there is room in that newbe chat for me to enter there is always more chit chat than asking for help going on so i got used to just ignore that chat
i dare to say though im one of the more helpful mentors... even if most of my help happens in discord and twitch chats

You can never tell when a sprout is a genuine new player anymore or just an alt. Or even an alt pretending to be new cause they can.

I find my hubby and I are more helpful then 80% of mentors I've seen

I think there are several lvl to that.

- Mentor just mean you played long enough while being civil enough, not that you know everything in the game. You can be mentor and end in a content you haven't done in years.
- Some people can't take advice without taking it like a personal attack, because they don't want to admit they may not be as good as they think they are.
- Some mentors feels like it's their duty to educate the mass while not always without even letting people try by themselves.

I feel like the mentality "Mentor just want to show off" is part of the problem. The whole prejudice is part of why most mentor don't show their crown or just shut up. When they say something, they get told their help is not needed, when they don't they're told they do nothing. You never win. Most mentor I played with were fine. A few one were overzealous, and I can count on my fingers the number of really annoying mentors. Most content don't really need mentoring anyway, and I'm sure a lot of the non mentors that helped, are mentors that didn't display the crown because of the prejudice, and just wanted to access Novice Network again (even if NN is mostly people talking about their life, so most of the time, you end missing the actual questions).

I have a sneaking suspicion there is more to this, I noticed that you never said he pulled too much but rather that he didn't bother to hold them. My guess is he was going up the far left side of the first chamber and then cutting into the boss room but the other players didn't follow in his footsteps and either got pulled by the toad or the wandering patrol and expected him to come back and save them.

Oh, he tried that, and some of the other players pulled the other mobs and wiped the group, so, yes, he did try that. But I'm not talking about that at all. This was well after, past that point.

He pulled 3 pulls of mobs, nothing I can't do myself on my tank, but he couldn't hold on to them, or didn't care to try, or something.

I think people are just a bit stuck up;
they ether resent being told mechanics that they already know and respond with a "HoW DaRe yOu?!"
or they expect that mentors are there to carry them to victory with little responsibility on their own play..
or they are the mentor thats wants to helicopter mom the entire party in to their ideal play style..

not all are bad, some are genuinely good people trying to help, but others are seeing the crown as a status symbol to unlock to prove they are some way better than you..
myself i don't put the crown on at all, i keep it hidden away, when I'm able to, I help, but it feels kinda snobby lording the badge over other players like me farming commendations in any way makes me a better player.. just because i have that badge doesn't make me incapable of messing up, nor does it mean i have to be a living encyclopedia on every mechanic.

Oh, the fault at the start was not even relevant. Forget about that first part. Not even what I posted about. I didn't blame him other than trying that, knowing that 90% of the time it fails, and not because of me.. This was way after, way after sneaking part. He was pulling mobs that he couldn't hold. But, you're bound you'll defend him whatever comes. Whatever.
