Some of the only abuse I have received from this community has been while wearing the crown. I genuinely try to always be helpful, I dont give unsolicited advice, and have no problem with telling someone that I don't have an answer. If I dont know, I dont know.

Mentors are like any other civil servant, there are good ones and bad ones.

This 50x over. Obviously there are plenty of helpful mentors out there, but status and rewards have drawn a lot of the wrong crowd to taint the reputation mentorship status should uphold (in NA at least).

    Key things here

1-I think most people agree to never give advice, either to people not listening or replying how they didn't ask for it, and guess what?
    They don't need to
I stopped giving advices and to spend most of my mentor roulettes on complete silence(maybe a joke here or a comment there, or if anyone started a topic for sure or along other mentors) after i tried to remind a DNC constantly about trying to use standard stept on CD on heroes gaunlet(lvl 80 dungeon), he fighted me with a "Are you going to keep pulling or you gonna lecture me about a job i picked up 20 minutes ago" and i was like, novice DNC forgetting about refreshing their buff is a normal thing, it's fine, he put the dance partner but didn't refresh the buff ever wich made it useless(Fun fact later on everyone died on final boss, soloing from 70% to 20% i dc'ed and got kicked )
Point being even if they do things "wrong" like forgetting buffs, SAM not using midares, healers spamming their equivalents of cure 1(Cure 1, Benefic, Psych and normal diagnosis) it doesn't matter because you can still clear content regardless of it, and it they've been over 90 levels without caring at all most probable thing will be they will keep without doing so, because it just doesn't matter.

2- Mentor roulette for most people is just a means to an end, they get in, complete a shit ton of roulettes for any content, get out, after a bizillion hours get the mount.
If they can save themselves the headaches that is having to explain something they will or just not care at all, for sure some will want to help of course but taking in count you can do that on literally any other roulette most from mentor one are just there for said mount

3- NN freaking sucks, i'm amazed we haven't got a general chat for well, everyone, yeah linkshells exist but even those require an invitation and a bit of research
Even when a sprout and after i became a mentor NN is but a general chat for those and rarely focused on helping people but just messing around wich okay, it's not a bad thing, but it obviously should be the place for it, wich is kinda sad

As a mentor myself, I can confirm that we are pretty useless.

Honestly I've never gotten my mentor crown again after they changed how you get it, and an interaction with a ''''mentor'''' back on Odin made me never want it again.

Was ST and WoD with a new person, in a mic call, with two other people (One of which kept trying to push me to get the mentor crown). The mentor didn't want to explain anything to the new person, so I started to. Only took them 1-2 boss fights before they began interrupting me and complaining that I'm 'overloading the new person' any time I tried to explain the simplest mechanic.

Like, I've had people in 24 man runs tell me to shut up when I'm the only one explaining mechanics to new people (Happens the most to me at Thunder God Cid... you guys remember the pain), and I'm just wondering why so many people get the loudest, in a bad way, when people are trying to help other people.

I roll my eyes any time I see the mentor crown on someone, cause they're always the last ones I expect to give helpful advice.

People tend to remember the one extreme case and forget the broad mediocrity that fills the other 99.9999999% of the time. It's also why the rng in this game is hated since it holds no memory of past rolls.

I feel the most helpful thing mentors can do right now is hop over to Dynamis and do their rolo there. (NA of course.) The queues aren't long since they can queue for everything except for savage and ultimates. There is still a lot of sprouts trying to either do side dungeons, their rolos, and MSQ on that DC. We all know Dynamis had little chance since DC travel came too soon. Its growing slowly, and now is the best time for a mentor to help out since they can queue for almost everything in the game. I know the whole reason why Dynamis queues is still bad is because players keep traveling over to the more popular DC's to do their content with its already low population; but there is still a lot of people who want to just stick to their own communities and not have to do that. Let alone there are sprouts who don't know about DC travel simply because they are that new.

To me personally, doing this has made me feel like I've helped a lot more compared to just doing it on my own DC. I don't think mentors are bad, but trying to do 2000 instances to get a mount will burn anyone out, especially to those who grind it back to back. I get why they do that because 1 mentor rolo a day = 6 years roughly to get the mount. Burned out players tend to be faded or really irritated. They would not have the patience that they surely need for new players. Thankfully not everyone is like this.

Their helpfulness is situational. Some have an ego problem, some don't speak up about stuff unless someone asks/the group keeps failing at the same thing over and over, and others just give advice without anyone asking. So, being helpful/unhelpful is very dependent on the mentor themselves, and the person receiving the advice/help.

This is a great idea. When I think about how long my alts queues are in that data center, they do take like 10 minutes for a dps. I'll roll over there on my tank when I get the time. Thanks!
