That's interesting - so in a group setting, there's basically not any reason not to use your TP-based weapon skills / abilities when they're available? In FFXI, it was all about coordination and knowing what magic type the mob was weak to. How common is it for groups to go out and grind XP together? I imagine it's not quite as common now that there are leves... they seem to give decent XP.

People still shout for power leveling groups. Leves are good for XP until you run out of allowances for them.

I read somewhere that power leveling consisted of getting someone with a higher level character to join the group, tag some mobs and then drop group. Something of that nature. I suppose I'm not too interested in that sort of power leveling, but more interested in a group of people going out together and chain pulling mobs for the XP bonus. Something that's still challenging, I guess. Or is that considered power leveling in FFXIV?

I always associated power leveling with getting a group together and just going out and beating things in the face. But yeah, in a group you'll more than likely fight mobs that are around 5-10 levels above you (the chain xp you get for stuff like that is great). From what I've seen so far, XP group shouts have been random of late and always involve higher level players; but I'm sure that I've just missed the lower level group shouts since I'm barely in a city for too long.

you are correct Pleveling is getting a high level to pull drop and then kill mobs for you. Also feel free to use weaponskills when they are available.

If you can find a group that'll be your best bet (unless you want to get PL'd). Try shouting in Uldah once your there for a party +/- 4 levels from your own. Someone in the party will likely have a good camp for your level. You can also try the Look for Group option that this game provides. In the past it wasn't heavily used mostly because of how bad the system was, then it was updated and slowly more and more people are starting to use it so it's worth a shot. Leve's are good if you can't find a group fast enough, but eventually you'll realize that you might want to save those for your DoH/DoL classes when you can.

You'll still use your weaponskills/abilities, there's just no 'group' combo system atm. We used to have an OK group combo system, but in my opinion it wasn't as good as XI's so it's good they're working on an updated one. Just solo combo's for now, sorta like solo-skillchains with your weaponskills/abilities for extra bonuses.

Not unless you've got alot of rested XP and/or farming something for a profit. It's your first DoW/M to 50, so go ahead and use your leves for that bonus exp if you can't manage to get a group.
