I think they kinda lost the right to hate on us for mods with the recent cheating scandal they had involving plugins. He said before that it's something they would like to do but mention that there are extreme cultural differences between the JP playerbase and the NA playerbase and isn't entirely confident we would get along very well. He is concerned of a cultural war happening and the damage it could do to the sustainability of the game. Such as Party Finders being labelled "JP or NA only!" to join. And he isn't wrong. Just look at the cultural opinions JP has on mods vs NA. It definitely would cause a community stir.
Traveling such great distances would be quite the voyage.

They need to add cross-DC DF/PF before making cross-region travel. Adding additional travel options would only further the current problem rn XD
I am totally ok with leaving the JP data centers private and separate of the others. As all of the other DCs spun off from the NA DC, culturally it’s much easier to link then all. For a start, I would test it with NA and OCE.
Consider: If cross-region travel ever does get implemented, it will mean there will not (likely) be any further instances of, for example, only taking NA servers down for maintenance, as happened only a few weeks ago. The result of announcing only one region will experience downtime would result in an absolute flood of players to other regions in order to avoid any loss of playtime. None of the regional infrastructure is likely capable of handling that influx.
Wouldn't be surprised if there are more behind-the-scenes considerations like that going into the decision, more than "noooo we like our semi-closed JP community."
There have been instances of specific worlds going down, and avoiding the inconvenience by visiting another. There have been instances of specific data centers going down and avoiding that by traveling to another. So I'm not sure about this being true.
In other news, there is no technical debt from 1.0.
"We don't have ... a technological issue that was carried over from 1.0, because ARR was meant to kind of discard what we had from 1.0 and rebuild it from the engine."

If I recall, the JP community bullied those people into deleting their characters or something like that. I could be wrong. They felt really embarrassed that it happened.

I feel like in the long run this could be something that would be nice to have implemented and if they're talking about possibly making it a thing I want to assume they probably have a plan on how to fix the issues that could happen with it, I just mainly feel if it did happen then I think they'd probably close off the JP servers from it since they're kind of a lot more different than NA or other EU servers.
Just connect all the english servers. JP can stay segregated if they want but perhaps if they were connected as well then they would take the chance to learn our ways of playing.
No thanks no, the JP don't want NA over there. And EU doesn't want NA either. You can stay in your own cesspool.
