A Data Gathering Process (DGP) is a relatively generic term for "something that generates data". Go roll some dice. Or flip pennies.

In the case of SteamCharts, the Data Gathering Process consists, as far as I can tell, of sampling how many players are currently playing a game. It's performed once an hour, producing 720 data points per month which are then averaged. 'Peak players' is a highest single data point over the month. An example: Current players on Steam is 31,317. The 24-hour peak, coincidentally, is 31,317.

So, we know how the data is generated for SteamCharts.

Given that, please walk through the proofs for your statistical analysis that there is a 70% drop in the number of players on Steam. Define your variables and provide instances of those variables from the data you chose.

I expect a full breakdown, mind you, rather than the handwaving and blather. Or, perhaps, you cannot actually justify that writing y = f(x,u) gibberish in the first case?

I saw someone use my post to say "look, 70% reduction, gaem ded", and while the first half of that is true, I feel it fails to take into account that historically the late expansion drop off is always followed by an increase in total players by the time of the next expansion.

Either a significant percentage of those 70% return to the game, or we gain enough new players for it to not matter.

That said I do expect that the 7.0 expansion will have a smaller relative increase in new/returning players, because the current expansion has had the pandemic/WoW exodus spike which will affect the data.

I still expect that we will reach a new peak player count, mind. It seems the game has been growing pretty steadily, and I don't expect that to change over much, bar some extenuating circumstances.

Something else I think is worthy of note is that even with a relative drop of ~70%, that's still 30,000 concurrent players, which for an MMO is really healthy.

It's obviously basically impossible to get the exact numbers unless you're the Developers, but most of the estimates I see online but about 30-40,000 players as about the average for games like GW2, BDO, or ESO which are successful in their own right.

I'm gonna say it, but I don't think the game will grow beyond the release of end walker.

Right now the Devs need to do something about the good players it's lost.

The sad truth is, EW couldn't retain the players or continue to grow whilst under a current expansion like WOTLK did

Are we talking total player count, or concurrent player count? Because the concurrent player count never grows under a current expansion. It's always at it's peak on expansion launch, with the occasional smaller bump for each major patch.

The Steam charts I've been using for the previous calcs don't actually list total player count so far as I can tell. What are you using for that data?
