So do I… not to mention the possibility of other people feeling emboldened to do things like this in the future, because it’s been shown that there won’t be any consequences. I can’t for the life of me understand what would make someone do something like this.

People like that are a special kind of loser. There is no reasoning for their behavior, they just plain suck as humans.
