And, this gives me a good insight on how you read posts. Because I was very clear of my ignorance about Diablo IV, and even asked how it functioned. Since you are Here Championing it, and basically Advertising it.
Okay, I apologize for being a jerk. But you can't immediately have an opinion based on something new due to past experiences without looking into what it is we're discussing. It would be like if I said "No, Final Fantasy isn't an MMO. So I doubt XIV will be" without looking into it.

But I at least hope my insight into why D4 is an MMO compared to D1-3 was helpful. The multiplayer systems that went into D4, and the persistent world is just wild.

Basically the only similarities D4 has with older Diablo games, is that it's an ARPG in Sanctuary using D2 class names and some of their abilities. Otherwise it's a completely new game, it's an open world game with seamless persistent multiplayer.

It gave me some non-linear CRPG vibes too, basically go to the first main city and then I look around.. "Wait, so I can just.. Keep going in any direction and find new towns, quests, events, dungeons, and random people?" .. I got Elder Scrolls vibes basically, of just doing whatever I wanted in an open world. Then it has seamless multiplayer on top of that.

I also didn't make this thread. lol

Ok neat. Maybe one day if there is a free campaign or it goes on sale I can try it.
But knowing my history with Diablo, Im not in a rush to get it as Full Retail, and likely wont enjoy it that much. The type of game it is gets boring to me personally.

But... with AAA game launches over the past few years the first few months are usually the most fun because of all the Lulz resulting from bugs and glitches they failed to find... :P

Blizzard is marketing it as a multiplayer ARPG, not as a massively multiplayer ARPG. So it is not a MMO. They definitely would be marketing as a MMO if it qualifies as one. Diablo fans have been asking for a Diablo MMO for a very long time.

Giving players an option to play solo does not stop a MMO from being a MMO. Massive doesn't mean everyone in the same location at the same time, just that they're online on the same server at the same time.

It's not regressing as a MMO. It's giving players options on how to play. It's up to the individual player to decide whether they want to do content with other players or solo.

You say it yourself. It's easy for players to stretch things for either game any way they want. Yet the industry has standards to meet, and game developers are going to use those standards to market their games.

I'm going to trust Blizzard's judgment about what type of game they made is over yours. I can't argue with your feeling but you feeling that way doesn't make it fact.

Beta testing is even better. I can still remember early on in the Mists of Pandaria beta when Holy Nova was not affected by the GCD.

I just got out of the beta weekend and honestly I didn’t feel it was that different from Diablo 2, aside from having a persistent map… though if I’m being honest it’s more like Path of Exile. The only real-functional difference is like you said running across other PCs in the wild, but they were more akin to hunt trains in FFXIV in that they appeared briefly and violently, then they were gone. I didn’t play enough to notice, but I will/would miss the randomly generated rogue-like maps.

I guess everyone has a different definition of what MMO means, but mostly I just saw people loitering around the main hub or derping around just outside the hub. Wasn’t a bad play through, but I really was expecting something..I dunno.. more innovative?

If anyone is curious, if you liked D2 or D3, Path of Exile or even old school Gauntlet, you’ll probably like this. Not sure it’s a 100-hour kinda game, but it’ll probably entertain for a few hours. Maybe wait til it’s like 30 bucks.

I’ll probably do the main story one-and-done, myself.

    Same lol.

But FFXIV is still a long way off from a community focused, social experience. Looking forward to Palia's release and other MMOs like it in the future:

Lol where how WoW made it work. They literally homogenized their classes so far down it took classic popularity for them to realize "huh maybe we went too far". Also fun should be involved yes but you need balance as well no one wants to be the survival Hunter or Shadow priest after rework where both classes have had times are virtually unplayable in all aspects of game and just a meme.

Funny but i think if all jobs/classes/specs in any MMORPG would do equal dps the players would complain about it being unfair because X has a much easier rotation than Y and so it's unfair that they deal the same dps.
And they would complain about healers or supports dealing the same damage while helping the party in another way.

Will put you on ignore if you can't form a logical argument but argue nonetheless
