I don't recall there ever really being a straight up upgrade like this to the servers. Some updates to infrastructure and the like, sure, but this might be the first time they have said "Yeah, we're upgrading this stuff."https://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/wiki/Servers

If this is reliable. Kind of old.
Maybe there wasn't a last time. Just the first time. This wouldn't be all that surprising either given how companies milk their servers. Southwest just had a meltdown because of how old their stuff was. It's not uncommon for companies to drive them into the ground. Maybe repair individual pieces that fail.
For they too, have the Mark of Louisoix xD
When the servers were moved from Montreal to Cali we got an upgrade. They didn't physically move the servers. But that was the last time.
makes me think, that the new DCs have probably been running on newer parts for the last months then.., as they wouldn't get old hardware, to then just switch out.
<which may have issues with old ones.., then again, we don't hear much from those in the new DCs, asides the it's lonely over here.., I'm entitled to jump ship.., Lock the New characters so we fill up. (justifiably of course)
Hopefully it all makes smooth performance sense once it's complete.
what year was that? this is good info for posterity TBH, there doesn't seem to be good records.
Edit, found this thread, seems like 5/17:

Okay even more relevant this is what happened last time they upgraded, directly from the forums and Yoshi P
Thanks largely in part to support from our loyal fan base, FINAL FANTASY XIV has continued to exhibit steady growth, allowing for even larger company investment into the project. As has been previously announced, with the release of our upcoming expansion Stormblood, we are planning major updates and upgrades to our server system to allow not only for increased server efficiency, but also:
Increased inventory capacity
Worldless (cross-world) party matching and friend management
Additional content & increased field size for new areas
All which we hope will contribute to increased playability.

Also, Naoki Yoshida posted in the general forums? Wow..

I don't get the conspiracy thing in all this...also running this kind of hardware and servers is not something you can do in your moms basement or the likes.... this is way more complicated than that... also an upgrade to the hardware to handle the loads better and more is only a good step ahead...
when was the last time they upgrade EU and JP dc?
Here's hoping that they do..,
if not, it'll be kinda sad that a decent, if not good mmo fails on that.
Since many joke/seriously repeat the "Maintenance mode".
Here's to whatever the next decade or not brings..,
[Hopefully good]
I can't wait to not be able to log in for three straight days because somebody forgot to feed the new hamster before shipping it.
