    Whips in final fantasy games have typically been usable form the back row, which makes it a ranged weapon.

    But for implementation in FF14, I'd expect it to be a bit of a hybrid. A melee weapon, but with a 6-yalm range instead of the standard 3-yalm range. It would suit a new Scouting job pretty well, considering Ninja is already a melee/ranged hybrid with it's use of Aiming accessories and several ranged attacks via Ninjutsu.

    But it being a direct physical effect, it also remains a melee weapon. A longsword, even if 10 meters, is still a sword, and therefor melee.

    And this would match expectations. And a 6yalm distance is close enough to involve positionals.

    Although, i would actualy prefer a ranged character with positionals. But instead of involving angle, it could involve distance, or just a combination of both. While the whip is a physical attack, there is nothing to restrict it from magicly getting a longer range. And if side positionals are used, maybe this could even be made an ability (jump 90 degrees to the left/right of the enemy you marked). Another ability idea would be one that marks the next one as the opposite positional (a weaker true north in effect, but also with shorter cooldown as a sort of sage like mechanic).

    There is a lot of potential with characters that can do both.
