I'll take the "mismatched gear" that is at the very least more compliant with what characters would be expected to wear outside of comic relief over the usual hideous and unfunny glamour people wear.
The in-game gear is designed to really look like something that was tailored/forged in the setting, unlike most of the glamour sets people wear. Someone wearing an incomplete set with a different armor still looks a lot better to me, because worst case I can tell it's an adventurer who couldn't afford the complete thing/still hasn't completed their job/role quest, etc. If I see someone in swimwear or dumb animal costume they just come off as complete weirdos that joined me for the dungeon because reasons.
