The difference being that a cash shop exclusive outfit is more than three times the price of an ex-seasonal event outfit.

Whatever you think of the cash shop, you can't say there's no difference in the final outcome here.

Sure, you can look at it that way. But you can have this outfit now. Like, right now. You don't have to wait for the seasonal event to end. You can even wear this one during this year's event as you quest for the mount if you so desire. Also, when the caribou does go into the cash shop, it will be $24USD opposed to the outfit that goes for $18USD. So would you rather pay 4x the amount of an event outfit, assuming you want both items? It might go for half of that being an event mount, but you're still going to have to wait for it to go into the shop.

Also, event outfits aren't always a set of five dyeable pieces. I think the cost is pretty fair for any costume set of five dyeable, unrestricted pieces of gear.

We're getting a mount this year. And it is one that is currently in demand iirc. Event items are all destined to end up in the cash shop anyway, so I wouldn't stress it that much.

$15 for sub
$20 for mount

Doesn't matter how they did this, since there is an almost 0% chance they would have done both for the event, people would complain.

Really, the fact that a game with a box price and sub has a cosmetic shop at all is ridiculous.

Reason we have the shop, was back in early 2.0 days the servers were really bad. Yoshi went to the SE higher ups and asked for more, better servers to be added. They said no, the game was gaining more people then they were loosing so they didn't see the point in spending money.

So Yoshi asked if they could implement a shop, the cost of the outside team comes out of the xiv budget, but all revenue it generates goes back into xiv. (Though not sure how true the last part is today)

The team that designs the shop items are a third party team, that xiv has a contract with.

I don't wear head gear but I am getting a bit annoyed the fellow lions and bunnies who want to wear em can't..

I understand why they can’t make every hat work with bunny ears and have it like poke thru or have holes or some such. That’s extra development time for every item. What I DONT understand is why they don’t just have show helm ignore bunny ears altogether and show the helm just like they would if it’s a human. Ignore the ears altogether. That should be a simple toggle palllate swap and then they can do the “ears thru” for a few helms here and there.

The developers of the game intended the rewards for this year's event to be the mount.

The business unit that is in charge of creating cash shop items decided to incorporate a new glamour for the season. This business unit does not answer directly to the Producer of FFXIV, and there is no way that the developers could incorporate the item in-game outside of the cash shop. There is also the possibility that this glamour item was commissioned and created by the Chinese or Korean partners who manage the FFXIV servers for those markets. It's either cash shop or it doesn't see the light of day outside of those groups.

Keep that in mind the next time your rage-o-meter starts to flicker.

It’s funny that Overwatch 2 is exploding in controversy over their Christmas shop where the skins are $20, but when ours are almost the same price no one balks. In fact, we pay for the game, the sub, AND the outfit. They don’t even pay for anything else! And yet they get the controversy and not us.

It’s time for people to realize that FFXIV fans have an unhealthy and para-social relationship with their game. Square Enix does not care about you. They care about revenue. You are a customer buying a product, and your brand loyalty means nothing.

The point of this thread is people balking at the price of Mogstation items.

It’s not as big a controversy because the game probably isn’t as big as OW2 and Mogstation has been around for almost a decade.
