This does suck, as from what I've read, OCE players wanted a datacenter of their own. And not this.

Keyword here, legitimate. You're right on all of that though, outside of visiting friends or seeing the things that some servers are known for (like the outdoor market in Tonberry), I don't think many would deal with garbage ping just to "torture" the other regions.Everyone's assuming that NA would flood the gates of JP and destroy them, but I personally know some NA players that are playing on JP just fine, in fact, they're indistinguishable from the other english speakers because they don't stick out.
I also highly doubt that NA would even bother coming to JP after the novelty wears off, they'd likely find the culture doesn't suit them and just return to their NA servers. Incompatible people don't generally hang around each other by choice.
The only legit concern about cross region is the marketboard pricing differences between NA and JP, if they disable the marketboard when in another region, then I don't see why cross region should be so opposed.
Stereotypes based on the news that don't even reflect the views of the community itself or showing both sides are not.
Something needs to be done to get us to a critical mass where the data center functions normally. SE made the center, provided incentives, yet the center isn't achieving the population numbers it needs.
They can do nothing and let the center fail or they can take steps to help it and the responsibility is on the developer/director to see that this doesn't fester and get worse. Again I don't know if DC regional travel can be implemented selectively but if it can that at least can keep the center from bleeding given residents can dc travel to get some content done.
Let us travel to English speaking DC's we don't need Japan for this to work.
But if people go to other DCs for fulfilling their endgame party needs, what incentive will there be for them to keep any foundation in their home DC?
Mortal Fist
Gosh I just love the delusion of "NA is the only region full of problematic players", as if trolls and toxic individuals don't exist freaking everywhere (yes, even JP).
...Who cares? Servers barely mean anything as it is - they just tie you to where your character is based for stuff like retainers, housing, and FC.
Meanwhile, some of us want to play with friends on other regions for things not related to endgame party needs, and to me that's far more important than the illusion of "foundation in their home DC". The focus should be getting people who want to have fun with other people to the place where they CAN do that, because the game is about FUN.
A ton of OCE players havent gone anywhere near the OCE servers because they A) can't play with the raid groups they're in already (or FC groups) or B) have heard the queues are abysmal. It would encourage people to join and stay on OCE if people knew they could still play the game if queues were slow. People joining/staying = population growth. Population growth, shorter queues = less reason to leave.
Lets be honest, you know you can go to another server for a slightly cheaper item on the market board but how often have you thought...nah, I'll just buy here, can't be bothered going if I don't have to. Same thing.
Remember when they opened cross-datacentre and all the role players on Brynhildr were raging about the same thing. "Toxic people will RUIN our space". All that happened is that people went to have a look for a few days and then went home.

As soon as possible, people I know are jumping to different regions for friends raiding times and it's getting irritating because I'm happily stationed in NA.
Enable Cross-region and let us all benefit, nothing is worth stopping that.
Having created an alt on Dynamis, I've come to the realization that cross-data center travel would not really solve the issue of low pop servers in Materia. Instead of being stuck and forced to foster a community on their home worlds, players will tend to travel to other data centers to escape the long queues, which lead to being longer queues on Dynamis, which leads to more people leaving to other DCs to queue for content, which leads to even longer queues on Dynamis etc.....well you get the idea.
If cross-data center travel happens, it will almost be assured that Materia would become even deader as players will just leave for NA/EU to do their content. Unfortunately, there is no simple solution to this issue other than raising awareness and inviting more friends/encouraging english speaking players from SEA region to leave JP and come to OCE instead.
..the traffic would be both ways. or did you forget that.players will tend to travel to other data centers to escape the long queues, which lead to being longer queues on Dynamis, which leads to more people leaving to other DCs to queue for content, which leads to even longer queues on Dynamis etc.....well you get the idea.
Who would willingly travel to a datacenter that has both longer queues and worse ping?
It's a legit problem, and data center travel just really isn't a good way to go about it.
Rather, SE could easily just say "Hey, move to OCE server, and set up your account with an OCE credit card/bank to pay and we'll give you 3 months free"
Not enough? Give 6 months free with purchase valid through 2023. You'd get people coming to save money, you'd get people telling their friends "hey just try it, you get 6 months of sub free!", and if even 20% of those people who try it stick, well, that's people.
That's the core issue- SE needs to entice people to populate these servers. The current 1 million gil nonsense is a non-starter.
