I had forgotten about upkeeps. EQ and EQ2 also charge upkeep on housing.
In 1: There's a weekly upkeep on housing. If you leave, your stuff gets packed up in a box for when you return.
In 2: Guild Halls require lots of cash plus status (an alt currency) to keep the doors open. You could spend some of their company currency on personal housing. You get an amount for free if you keep a subscription.

I'm sure other games have their own versions of this.

So, none of this is new. The demolition is just a more extreme consequence.
