Was it that different before ? I joined the forum in July this year, but the high level of "unpleasantness" seems constant to me.
I imagine it was might have been different before Endwalker thought.
I joined a little before Shadowbringers ended, and lurked for a month or so before making my first post. IDK. Maybe you're right, maybe it's always been there. It just came off like it's more prevalent and accepted now? Dunno. I guess it's a result of there being more people as a whole posting.

There's a pretty good swathe of folks who are also into activism or at the very least into outrage culture that frequent the forum.
It's also easier to post here without having your posts voted down or removed by mods due to personal biases.
The forums have always had trolls and haters and outragers. It has gotten a bit worse though, over the last couple of years. More folks resorting to and getting hooked on online outlets. More things to create fake outrage over every year, too.
Lotta folks, once they start beating a drum of hate can never stop beating that particular drum. For those on the activist side of things, often it becomes their source of income or at least intertwined with it closely. Then they must needs perform the labor of the negative in order to continue putting bread on the table. Same thing goes for stuff outside FFXIV, too.

"I thought that my invincible power would hold the world captive, leaving me in a freedom undisturbed. Thus night and day I worked at the chain with huge fires and cruel hard strokes. When at last the work was done and the links were complete and unbreakable, I found that it held me in its grip." - Rabindranath Tagore
Found that Mountain Dew Fruit Quake from a couple pages back. Even the cashier gave it a second look.
It's not bad. Kinda tastes like a milder Code Red.
Oh I don't think Teferi yeeting him into a window killed him in any way. That's just me being like "That guy fought the God Pharaoh Dragon three times and lived, and that guy fought Phyrexians before and even noped out of the whole war. How does their duel end? Yeet goes the cat."No way the scary phyrexian phase will last for Ajani. They hinted it was possible to revert it. They also know he's really popular with kids. He's even the mascot for their Extra Life charity events, killing him off like that would be real dark.
Also Jaya died the same set and they made it a big deal, if he was truly gone forever I'd expect them to milk it much harder.
My main issue is that even if Elspeth found a cure, they're playing Ajani up way too hard. Not even Tamiyo has this much attention. And while it seems possible to cure Compleation, they still haven't focused on it whatsoever. They need to find a way to revert it in two sets, and next set's mostly just going to be focused on Elesh Norn and Urabrask. And given how they've dealt with plotlines before, I'm not so positive about them respecting their characters.
...unless Elspeth just figures out the cure on a whim at the last second. Wouldn't put it past them xD
What I want: Elspeth to cure her old mentor, with all this clearly being played up for the friendship drama. After that Elspeth gets to take a deep breath.
What I'm expecting: Elspeth to find the cure doesn't work as well as she thought and she has to kill her old mentor for drama.
Either that, or Chandra going nutso because Ajani killed Jaya.
And I'm not one for drama like that in the hands of inconsistent writers that haven't done a good job with their stories for a long while now. Because it can go poorly. And it has. They have plenty of characters to explore and ruin on accident. What even is the point of Teyo Verada or Kasmina? Kiora literally has no purpose anymore. Lukka's just Red Garruk. Ajani's just there to tug at the heartstrings because Elspeth is important. And while I hope the cure is used on him, I also don't want to see them waste characters for drama and motivation.
Another issue that stems from this is that if she cures Ajani, they're going to have to deal with the fact that Ajani didn't fight the Compleation. It's stated specifically that he found a home that finally accepted him for what he was, and that he doesn't want people to fight, just be one big happy family. Even if he's cured, there's still going to be that side of him there.
I just try to pay them no mind. Now if they get into one of their heated arguments I just stay out of it cause my opinion may as well be thrown up against a wall for all it does.
When you deal with human beings, never count on logic or consistency.

Just reading the name, "Flaming Cheeto Mountain Dew" makes me gag. And I love Mountain Dew.

I've been trying my best to stay out of Gen Discussion because I've been personally attacked twice already but I unfortunately am morbidly curious sometimes. It's a bad habit to have in this day and age.
People get mad over the most insignificant and vacuous of things.
Somehow...somewhere...after I had spent 6 years in college and 3 years looking for work, I come back to a time where snark remarks and sarcasm are a form of humor instead of a type of insult. -waves old cane- back in my day! It used to be the other way around!
I wonder if anyone knows what an actual joke is anymore? I sure as hell don't anymore since a lot of what people find funny are constantly synonymous with insults.
