You don't have to level up your island at all. Keep it natural. And there's your non-sweatshop paradise.
For those that have spent the time to level it up, it goes into "easy mode" relatively quickly. Some players check their island weekly. They set crops and pasture to auto-care. Make a week's worth of feed. Set up the granary for 1 or 2 different items and pay for 7 days. Set the workshop to crop-based items on Day 2 and 3 or 4. Then they check the weekly "what should I make" threads on reddit or discord. They go to their island on Thursday - and set up the workshop.
They log in the next Thursday and pickup their crops, animal leavings, granary stuff (rotating the items) and setup the workshop again. It's probably all of 15 minutes/week at that point.
What does that have to do with anything I said? One can certainly make the Island your own personal nightmare by trying to obtain everything in the shortest period of time.
Or, one can take time, play around with the easy content. Having spent the first six months after starting the game in hotels with 'iffy' Internet, crafting and gathering was a quiet way of spending the evening during the week, with actual 'dungeon instance' gameplay relegated to the weekends. The Island is pretty reminiscent of those days.
One does not have to become a billionaire for the Island to hold interest. I've seen a number of comments about the lack of "content". Content that was rushed through based on Fear of Missing Out, it looks to me.
While you will get kicked out if you go AFK, you can log out on the island and find yourself back there when you log back in. You also get kicked out of dungeons after a certain period of time. An instance is an instance is an instance ...
Plus, it's a pretty nice place to go and watch a sunset on an otherwise off day in-game.
The Island is unrewarding if you do it in a week or a month, you do not get to add any of your own personal touch to it, you go to it to manage Tataru's mammet sweatshop, and then you leave.
What was advertised was not what was delivered.
The Island is very rewarding. It just may not have the rewards you are personally looking for. What does that have to do with anything I said?

I agree it lacks customization that would improve the experience but we were never promised much in the way of customization in the first place. We were told we'd be able to place buildings and change how they look. We can place buildings. We can change how they look (even if those options are boring).
Most of what was advertised actually was delivered. What wasn't delivered was the inflated expectations that players set for the Island despite YoshiP repeatedly asking players to lower them. We don't know if there will be further features added in the next update when it comes out or if we're just getting a new area that works the same way. Perhaps some of the little things that weren't delivered so far will be delivered then.
island pretty rewarding for me tbh
easy as hell Ruby red, dragoon blue, gun metal and pearl dye
never have to step in ishgard again.
Sounds like you're just being lazy. What did you expect? Rewards on a silver platter? AFK Arena 24/7? The island is yours to do so what you want, it's never advertised as being full fledged industrial operation on the get go.
Yeah, I saw rumblings of uh oh when people were expecting a full-blown stardew valley inside of FFXIV. Maybe it'll become that in time, but that's a bit much to expect right at the start. The Island is very rewarding. It just may not have the rewards you are personally looking for.

The best suggestion I've seen so far is the ability to place external "garden" furniture from housing on your island. People could have their own private gpose aesthetic garden... and I could place bonfires everywhere on mine.
Maybe, resources permitting, we could have a private interior. That certainly seems like something that would be gated behind a fairly long term gameplay unlock series, akin to the pixie playland or doman reconstruction. We are there to develop the private island Mr. Beast gave us, after all, so that naturally seems like the later stages of island development.

I find the mammets so annoying. They say I must give them something to clear the land, I do it because I have no other option if I want to advance, they complain but they do it, then they complain that it's all just buildings and no nature anymore. While sometimes they say they're happy the nature is gone. If it were my decision I would have kept the trees and rocks, so why do they lash out at me for that? Everything they say they say in such an annoying passive aggressively way. It's the opposite of relaxing.
I mean the gameplay is mind-numbingly boring (but at least it doesn't matter if you take months to do it). But if the feeling would have been better the Island Sanctuary would have been acceptable at least. But it's not a sanctuary at all. It's a factory with the most annoying workers that order me around about how I have to order them around. Build the island sanctuary of my dreams? Not possible with them around.
I would have wanted to keep the island more natural instead of being forced to build super ugly sheds. The animals just together on grass with a fence around it feels so wrong. No wonder they're permanently pissed off.
I'd like to release all the mammets and instead get a handful of people as helpers instead. Then I wouldn't feel annoyed about paying them. Like, some Limsa ex pirates would even be better, they'd at least have a job then.
The way it's now it's just a boring, super simple and outdated click on stuff chore simulator that makes you feel annoyed by everything but the pretty scenery. Unless it's dark, rainy, and you actually thought you'll get large fields and plains instead of a mini tropical forest.
I came in thinking the complaint would be that the content is way too short because you hit rank 10 in a week, lol.
I guess it's just not for you OP. Personally I love it, but there's no where near enough to do. So I find it hard to swallow about being asked to do all sorts of things when everything was finished within about a week time.
That's short compared to everything else in the game lol.
TBH I was expecting a lot more then what's there now though, for the initial release. A DQB2 mode but meh
Was already confirmed that more coming in x.3
