NPC Companion instead of Chocobo?

I know mounts have evolved since then, but isn't the idea of it being a chocobo companion as opposed to something else is the fact that the chocobo is your mount AND your fighting buddy? You travel around together. That's why when you mount, the chocobo companion disappears, as you are essentially climbing on top of your chocobo.

Those two are the same thing in Lower Limsa and among a certain part of the playerbase.

There were plans early on for there to be other battle companions aside from the chocobo, presumably other mounts like the Magitek Armor but after the work they put in to allow you to queue DF while still having the chocobo out they just stopped talking about any such plans. Well they stopped talking about it much sooner than that DF compatible implementation but once that implementation went into effect I assumed those ideas were finally dead internally.
