I think it's pretty simple: they try to get away with the bare minimum possible. Typically the community has been accepting of anything they do, so that's probably why they were surprised they got any pushback.

They really messed up on that one. It's the one subject where you can trash SE on the main subreddit's front page and have most people in full agreement. The ears drama was the turning point where it became impossible to defend them anymore.
