Pteranodon sadly was botted. There were even links from the bot forums where they openly discussed it. While some players definitely obtained it legitimately, you can never tell. Not that it matters if you only obtained it for personal satisfaction, but I wouldn't be as impressed by seeing one.

Botters ruining players hard work trophies are probably the biggest grievance I have with them.
I almost never ride my pteranodon because of this. Sad times.

Problem is that there are many achievements, mounts, titles, etc that could have been bot-assisted. Hell, so many aspects of this game are probably able to be botted or assisted in some manner, then we might as well not recognize any achievements at all. It really is a sad state of affairs.

Why players should go after achievements for personal satisfaction instead of trying to impress others.

Speaking as a relatively new player (11months), I can't say that I've ever been "impressed" by a mount until after I've gone through the slog to get it myself. For example, I have no idea which mounts are from savage, because I've never done savage. I am impressed when I see some of the others that I do have, such as the dire wolf or (soon) namazu mount, because I know what it takes to get them.
