Everything in any game is an "optional luxury".

Doesn't matter if it's vanity glamour and minions, or endgame gear and player power, it's virtual and you don't need any of it. To some players glamor and collecting is far more important to them anyway and they couldn't care less about gear.

If pay-to-win mobile games are considered being too heavy on monetization, then FF14 isn't an exception. Whether you're fine with it or not, they definitely monetize this game quite heavily.

How much impact that has varies by the player. Nothing in that shop gives players an edge over anyone else. Hell you don't even have to interact with the shop in game as iirc Yoshi doesn't want it plastered in people's faces.

You yourself have to go out of your way to access if you so choose. Seems a good say for SE to handle that.

Try being any sort of competent crafter with no retainers

Retainers are literally “pay real money to buy more inventory space” and that is one of the most predatory things an MMO can do outside of BDO style RNG upgrade weapon is destroyed if you fail

I bought one retainer once for a couple months when I first got to top tier crafting, while also just getting into farming different things like extreme trials. Now that there are no more HQ harvests, it doesn't pay to hold on to very much, aside from crafted components.
