If you can do this with a full pasture outside of caretaking, it seems odd to not be able to under caretaking. Have you submitted a bug ticket somewhere? It may just be a corner case that got missed in testing.

I hate to say it, but it's not a bug, it's a feature. As I understand it, each creature is essentially isolated from actions until you decide to end that care following the prompts on the caretaker. The same goes for the crops.

That's not true at all for the pasture. You can Feed, Pet, and Beckon creatures under care. So I don't think the OP was wrong in thinking all pasture options would be available under care since the others are. The crops do work like that.
