Funny enough, those types of stories are why I don't have a twitter/FB/tiktok/ect. These forums are the most I post online, lol.
As unhinged as some of them get I find the best way to deal with their ilk is to simply stand one's ground. More often than not they're all bark, no bite. Even when operating as a group. It's just a case of remaining stoic, calm and letting them dig a hole to fall into entirely of their own accord.

It's actually kind of amusing because they're so used to people just running away, apologising (even if not at fault) or being scared into silence that they seem to get particularly upset when someone doesn't bend to their whims.

While that may be true, not everyone has the mental or monetary means to fight back. Seeing the Goemon 3 translator get bullied to the point he gave up on translating old games was heartbreaking considering he actually liked doing that as a hobby and his works were nearly 1:1 to the jp script. All you can do is look on and take it to heart as another life lesson...

I googled what happened to him, and yikes... The guy was called out on it by someone who offered a better translation for the term. Turns out the term really is in the original Japanese (which is what you said about it being 1:1), and not only did he struggle with finding anything better, someone actually did tell him that though inappropriate, there were terms that fit the scene better. He thanked them and even explained that it fit the context and the era. But he was still lambasted for it after Hardcore101 made a bigger deal about it than it already was.

At that point it was an entire community following a guy adding fuel to a fire. So he really didn't have much to fight back against, his only option really was just leaving the project. Had he ignored it, it could have gone sour for the game since people would associate him to the game. And that would hurt the project.

Honestly, as whiny as the English forums might be, I think the JP forums can be a lot worse. I don't think EN General is in the habit of threatening or wishing death on the dev team. But changes to Samurai did need Yoshida to tell people in JP to chill, and from what I've been told, he's been seeing stuff like that happen since his Dragon Quest days.

You also have to choose how much energy you're willing to expend defending your ground. Truth, reason, logic, stoicism only serve to anger these people further. Also, if you find yourself repeating your arguments, the conversation is over. At least anything constructive that can come from it. The time and energy spent to get absolutely nowhere just isn't worth it.

Turning the other cheek just means you are conceding your ground. You can always decide that is the hill you will die on but there is a point where it stops becoming an issue where you stand your ground and becomes an issue of weathering the storm. As you read from the poster above you, all it took was a small group of people with a "just cause" to shut someone down. Perhaps i'm looking too much into it. I should see the new-half of the argument. ;^)

I saw the revised translation, it felt like it got hit by the localization bat and it reminds me of this vi...
Edit: it seems that the original video was scrubbed from youtube. It was from Drakengard 3. The original scene from the JP script was just the protag going "Damnit... Damnit! DAMNIT!" but somehow the west thought that wasn't edgy enough and changed it to where it said something along the lines of "You sex crazed murderer! You monster!". I am probably overlooking where that vid is but I remember being able to find it with a simple google search, lol.
