The ranged tax has been a thing since post HW. Their answer to ARR BRD was literally to put a cast time on them in HW and people hated the cast times (I didn't mind it personally) thus they removed it and lowered the physical ranged dps heavily.
I actually agree, I think BLM should be around samurais level, RDM/SMN should be given a boost to compensate a bit.
Phys ranged is another case, they shouldn't be above melee or BLM. (They should be a bit above rdm/smn considering both bring a battle raise, but it shouldn't be too much).
Yeah sure we should focus on balancing jobs in their "own categories" but it would be nice for more party comps aka double caster or double ranged comp, Not saying Melee shouldn't be top either just that they really don't need to be that far above the rest considering fight design.

Part of the "ranged tax" is that physical ranged jobs are supposed to have mobility as well as utility spells to make up for the lower damage, playing as a support/DPS.
Of course, machinist currently offers no unique utility (their only non-role utility is Tactician, which might as well be a role skill since it's functionally identical to Shield Samba and Troubador), while also having the worst damage, but that's another problem.

You dont need to use third party tools yourself to know any of this information. Because plenty of other people use them and the results are then logged on specific websites for everyone to see.
Casters are universally lower than melee. Stop burying your head in the sand and stop derping on about third party tools. We all know they are widely used for better or worse they are here to stay.
Heck, SE have buffed certain jobs after the masses have complained about their damage. After they themselves verify it. Balancing is an ongoing thing, as to be expected. But the players shouldnt just sit on their hands and say nothing. SE aren't perfect and we should all help each other the improve this game.

Notice the rather clear distinction between melee+blm compared to the other ranged jobs. The only reasons for that cliff to exist are either:
1) Ranged tax.
2) They're just really bad at balancing.
