Or you could use the common sense solution on pc and not have to complain. Hit X, hides players nameplates, see the npc...Other platforms use whatever key.

There's also the default 'target/interact with nearest object/NPC' (unsure of the exact name of the bind; I'm not in-game right now) which for a PC is NumPad 0 by default. Get near NPC/object, press 0 twice, done and done.
@OP: Yes I know this doesn't fix the aesthetic problem, but it's a surefire solution for getting on with your gaming.

I like how some people don't read what you typed and comment anyway.
Yeah, yeah I know all about the shortcuts and command key functions to bypass and interact. Nameplates isn't the problem or interacting with NPC.
/rolleyes (damn didn't work here)
OR ppl could not AFK in an instance....
For you information, my default selection is set so ill always target the npc/object first so for me it doesnt really matter, its just annoying - especially on whales etc..
Many things here are annoying, I don't care to be a Karen so I choose wisely on what I cannot filter enough to satisy meGL getting the afkers dealt with though because it's been the same thing for the almost 7 yrs I have been playing hehe..

Sounds like blowing up for sake of complaining. People are always going to afk.
Why would you focus on a solution which you have absolutely no control of?
