That's still just being pedantic that it's not "technically" required.
You know that's not what this is about. Putting customization behind either having level 90 crafters or paying high prices on the market board is pretty ridiculous.
Is it?
Pretty much every other content in the game has the same, from glamor, to minions, to mounts.
Either grind it out the hard way, or pay your way to "completion".
Hell, in some instances, they're literally behind a paywall
Here I thought people wouldn't be buying the stuff and wait until the prices drop but I've actually made about 35 mil selling the materials. Thank you, YoshiP.
Not really. Because that's what glamour is. That new coat on the market board is a mat from treasure maps, both of which you need to be lv 90 for that one and then you need to be able to be a weaver at level 90 to make it (or give the mats to someone else to make it for you) and it sells right now for 1.5 million if you buy it already made. Over time the price will decrease, which is what will happen to the fountain pieces.
You ARE being pedantic while making an argument that is in complete contradiction to the whole point of this entire thread. Whether it's optional or not is meaningless. IS was supposed to be entirely self-contained. They iterated on this multiple times. Putting the "cherry on top" behind the most difficult/expensive crafting in the game is crap.
Yes it is, I don't have to leave combat content to get relics. I don't need a pentamelded crafter to get an item for a relic step. I stay in combat content. I don't need to spend money on the market board for gear to run savage, I can just get gear, tomes, and materia from running combat content to meet the requirements. The problem is it crossing over types of content with the requirements and there being no alternative way to gain or earn these besides grinding a crafter or buying for high prices.
I checked back through the unofficial translations and if they said it would be "entirely" self contained, I can't find it (disclaimer, I might just be bad at searching). You ARE being pedantic while making an argument that is in complete contradiction to the whole point of this entire thread. In fact just from memory I believe they said the opposite during some LL, that at later levels you can buy stuff not restricted to IS.
In that case I believe they will be refering to the mats/glam/etc you can buy with IS currency.
No it isn't. Just like either paying for crafted gear on the MB or making it yourself isn't "pretty ridiculous". At no point did they specify that nothing on the island was tied to the outside - quite the opposite as ArcaneCarbuncle pointed out.
Funny how none of you have addressed this.
SourceMostly Island Sanctuary will not connect to the rest of the game's systems eg being able to get tokens to exchange for items outside the island, but when you "explore to the limit" you will find some elements that connect to the outside world.

I can earn raiding gear through clearing normal mode and gathering tomes if I don't have the gil to buy from the market board or the ability to craft gear. Where's the in-IS way to earn these materials? Even being able to buy them for the IS currencies would be an improvement over this mess.
Again, you've sidestepped the most accurate comparison, that of glamor.Yes it is, I don't have to leave combat content to get relics. The content "gated" here is literally just that. It's glamor for your landmarks.
Glamour is content that is incredibly gated. It's gated behind battle content, it's gated behind crafting content, it's gated behind paywalls.
Hell, some glamour is gated behind IS content.
There is nothing inconsistent, surprising, or particularly ridiculous.
I guarantee, give it a few patches, and we'll have mogstation exclusive IS "content".
