I'm not sure why but I LOVED doing dynamis even if I wast entitled to gear for that run. Sky on the other hand felt like a chore/job to me, I HAD to do it and farm for the LS and I would try and come up with any possible excuse not to go. At one point I would let my gf play my character during Amy farming days. Yes we had a sky schedule, just thinking about that again makes me want to vomit like the exorcist.

Dynamis was nice because once you got in (making sure the zone wasn't taken pre-change was kind of annoying, especially if your linkshell had scheduling conflicts with other shells or a ninja comes and snakes the zone while everyone is waiting) it was pretty much just killing stuff with other people. Usually 18-36+ people. Well, until the loot drama happened. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sky on the other hand, took too long to get anything done. Most of the NMs were timed pops. You would need to farm to get triggers and the like, and you would have competition for the same NMs.

If i wanted FF11 id play that. But i have more fun playing FF14 and would rather not have it become a FF11-2.
I like the changes done so far and the direction in which FF14 is heading.

I was a bard, unlike many Bards i wasnt the "Uh i have 10 lv 75 and nothing better to do imma lv Bard"-type Bard, it was my first Job i loved it, i didnt wanted to pull anything else up to 75. Jet to be able to join up CoP and all the other capped missions i had to since i was unable to join as Bard.
Trying to get into almost any pre 75 content with only haveing Bard at hand was horrible. I try to forget how many hours i spended in caves beating crabs for skill ups to be atleast able to farm lowbie mobs solo.
I still loved Bard but eventually i gave up at some point and started Blue Mage.

FF11 is a completely diffrent game and i rather have it stay that way. Like i said, if you want FF11 go play that. To have amazing graphics is heavily overarated anyways.
Gameplay mechanics >>> graphics. Also FF11 doenst look bad its just old. You can still see that the graphics where done with alot of love for details. :P
I find it hard to believe that one would stop playing FF11 cos of the graphics when all other mechanics are oh so perfect. Or maybe thats me getting old... ;D

But it is a false memory you see,

All of that content WAS all the same. The core game mechanic involved in every one of them was WAITING, and unbelieveable GRIND paired with Ridiculous randomness.

It was a gimick time sink way of extending game life that only a few die hard fans fell for.

What ppl actually miss if the "feeling", that sense of wonder and fondness, that nostalgia.

I take a fair bet that many of those who are still in love with ffxi to some extent (myself included) were MUCH younger, with far less time constraints when it was "popular" . It was the first really accessible western mmo due to it's platform release.

Most I believe are still attached to it on that basis. Like remembering your first date, or first kiss, or those types of sentiments.

If you have the ability to strip that sentiment away, take away all the good times you had bantering with your friends etc, and just look at the game mechanic, etc etc. What you get isa very beautiful world with a busted game mechanic. Right from the getgo....

All it took to be "good" at FFXI was immense amounts of time. Time sink is not a challenge.

Personally I can feel nostalgia about many mmos, as I've played dozens, and made friends and memories in many of them.

But at the end of the day....the game has to perform.

I love the classic cars, but at the end of the day, no matter how you fix em up....they just are not gonna ever run as good, or reliably, or efficiently, or have the features that a brand new Audi has.....

Some still prefer to drive the classics though. Most, however; see that the benefits far outweigh the nostalgia.

There were a ton of people who played FFXI for more hours a day than i did that were absoultely awful at it, so ya.... either you're remembering things a little wrong yourself or you just didn't pay attention. The other side is that I knew/know people who'd only play 5-10 hours a week and were gods at their jobs. To say it all boiled down to time spent might be true for things like "I have a 100 craft!" but aside from that I don't view your standpoint as at all valid, Jake.

What's the eloquent way to word my response to this...ah yes, I've got it! Here goes:

I would if they hadn't gutted the living sh#t out of it with Abyssea. Much as I hated WoTG and everything that came with it, it was still FFXI. IMO FFXI no longer exist, and I don't even know what to call the mutilated body snatcher residing in it's skin.

Kind of a shallow statement. First I'd like to point out that if you don't feel the attachment to it how would possibly know why others are attached to it? Secondly I believe it has little to do with nostalgia and more to do with psychology.

XI fans liked that it was punishing (and it was a challenge). It was the punishment that gave us all a rush. It's like how the exp loss made us fear dying, the fear of dying made a battle where you almost died more exciting. Getting out claimed for nms sucked, but when seeing something pop knowing you could lose claim made that moment intense. Then of course there was the praying that you'd get the drop.

XIV so far has very little excitement, instanced content that you spam over and over is not very exciting. You call XI one big grind, what do you think XIV is right now? Is killing Ifrit 100x for the weapon you wanted not a time sink? I prefer the XI method.

Who has the right to set the tone of somebody else's person preferences? Not to say nostalgia doesn't play a role with people but who are you to say that's all it is? XI was a better game. You may think the mechanics are broken but that's not how others feel. Having a newer idea doesn't make it a better one.

Obviously nostalgia didn't get them addicted to the game because we were all noobs at some point.

    @Levian
I dont know what came in FF11 after WotG. That was the last add on i played.
I played untill little while after LevelSync came which ended in me haveing nightmares about all the skill ups i will have to do after dinging 50 in a lv40 synced party, even worse on PLD who needs blocking and parrying. Also that all after i was just to "test pld" cos odly my bard didnt find a group. I guess cos so many lv75 bards where just getting their merrits in dooms partys...

Then i passed a dude in doomes who hit his first lv75 Job in there... then i kinda quitted. XD

The old FF11 was nice but unfortunately a GIANT time sink. Took over 1h if you traveled ur first time from the starter city windy to the lv10-19 leveling area...try pulling that up in a modern mmo. Or.. "well you missed ur airship by 0.001 sec cos ur too slow now.. stand there and wait 15min and look at the sky!" OMG imagine FF14 Airship would need that long and there wasnt ANY anima to get to nother city....
The ferrys .. they werent bad you could fish there and there were random pirate attacks that was fun.
