How is that the fault of the lottery? This critique was true in the previous system aswell.

I am not saying the lottery is the cause of the housing shortage (of course it isn't). My point is this - pushing for houses to be taken away from other players has resulted in measures to make the present situation fairer and more bearable. It has not pushed Square towards fixing the actual problem.

If we as a community continue to demand houses are taken away from the 'undeserving', then all we are going to get are more band-aids and minor tweaks.
I'd rather see Square working on ways to provide enough houses for everyone.

All i want is craft those minions, orchestral rolls and all that stuff that needs items which are exclusively gained from gardening! I hate to be at the mercy of the market board! @Solarra: ah ok. The way you phrased it it wasn't clear if you meant the lottery was at fault.

So lottery diminished the chances for bots and people that waste a full day to click a thing in a videogame. Tbh not that much of a sacrifice in my opinion. If you want to increase your chances just get more characters on the same server! (Yes there is someone on this forum who advocates for this. Clarification: I don't mean myself. I find the idea to pay extra to get better chances ridiculous)

Then why not ask a friend who has a house and isn't using their garden to add you as a tenant so you can use theirs? The amount you would have to pay to get a house exceeds how much you would have to pay to get all those gardening items you want from the marketboard.

Guess that depends on what you're trying to get. The gardening unique crafting materials (off the top of my head so I might miss one or two):

Glazenut
Blood Pepper
Royal Fern
Broombush
Jute
Cloudsbreath (technically not gardening unique but the other source is workshop)
Umbrella Fig (also the seeds in the case of one item)
Halone Gerbera
Nymeia Lily
Pearl Roselle

Most of those are involved in the process to crossbreed Thavnairian Onions so there's usually a good supply for sale on the MB. A few of them have a single fairly unpopular use so will sell for a couple of hundred gil at most. I don't think I've ever seen any of the rest over 100k gil (Glazenuts used to come close but it's been a long time since I've seen them that high). Generally you're looking at 10-40k gil for the more expensive ones.

Of course EU prices could be different but I doubt they would be that much different from NA. Even if supply disappears or prices get excessively high on your home world, there's world visit and data center travel to get them cheaper from another world.

There's a point when you need to consider opportunity cost - the value of your time plus the material cost to produce an item versus what it would cost to buy the actual item you want outright. First you're going to cross breed to get the seeds you want and some of them have an RNG component where you can get a different seed instead of what you want. Growth time for the first step will be 5-6 days. Then once you've managed to get the seed you want, it's going to take another 6-7 days to grow it. That's going to be almost 2 weeks of logging in without fail to get an item that you probably could buy off the marketboard for 30k.

Is it really worth the cost savings achieved at the expense of your time spent waiting to grow the item yourself when you could buy it and enjoy the end product today without having to babysit a garden patch for 2 weeks?

Obviously the choice is up to you but since you said you only want a house for the sake of being able to grow those items, I'd highly recommend checking the marketboard for the actual prices and supply of the items you need for what you want to make want before you invest in a house.

If someone only wants what can be crafted and were to buy all the minions, it would cost about 715K on my server atm (even less if you travel between worlds/data centers). This cost includes all other materials too, including rare materials that can often be sold for more than the minions/mounts on the MB. Each of the minions/mounts listed below requires inter-crossing (save the Allagan Melon) and multiple consecutive days of login for both intercrossing and growing the minions.

Many of these minions can already be obtained from retainers, fetes and GC loot boxes so in reality the total cost is much lower.

If you add the Flying Chair (115k - I got several from GC boxes) and Magicked Bed (1.8 M due to rare mats from maps), it is about 2.7 Mil total with immediate, guaranteed and effortless results.

You also have to add a 450k building permit to the purchase price of a small house.

I just grow Lavender indoors and outdoors: it’s easy to grow and I can exchange it for mats that sell well.

But what if someone wants to be the one selling.. what if gardening relaxes someone like fishing to others??
For now SE just make a 4 pot Garden box for your fc room or apartment,, So people can crossbreed..dosent matter why they wanna do it. (Yes another bandaid fix)

Yes many wont put in the time to crossbreed ..but some are like me and really like gardening..I knew onions n leveling choc's would be big for shadow bringers i had 50 onions ready to sell for months n months of hard work... man a ton for my hardwork

For those who genuinely like gardening, certainly they need a house.

But how do they know they like gardening that much unless they have access to it? That's why I always suggest getting added as a tenant to another player's house if they're interested in gardening and only gardening when it comes to housing. Or at the very least take what I call the Thavnairian Onion test (get a Thavnairian Onion seed and grow it successfully in a flowerpot). Give gardening a try before you commit gil for something you may learn you don't enjoy.

If someone only wants to buy a house to get access to a garden to bypass purchasing items off the marketboard, it's a waste of gil. All those players who complain about Thavnairian Onion prices - are they even thinking? What sense does it make to spend 3 million gil on a house so they don't have to pay 1.2 million for the Onions?
