Nope. Controlling a party is an essential feature of the series that set it apart from other RPGs from the very first game. I know everyone likes to parrot "but FF has always changed things up every game" and they may be right, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. In fact, I would say that the most experimental games like II and VIII are some of the worst, while the ones that refined old concepts like V and IX are among my favorites.

I've gone from thinking it was a coin flip around the time of XII, XIII, Type-0, and XIV to now just expecting to dislike every new FF game until one can finally prove otherwise.

This was a thing in RPGs predating Final Fantasy 1.

Echoing many in this thread, the game "looks" amazing but it's not a Final fantasy at it's core unfortunately. It's Dirge of Cerberus levels of different when it comes to actual gameplay. Without other party members (that we know of), the DMC over the top bayonetta style fighting is just a bit too far away for me personally as an old school rpg fan.

I really can't see why the dev team would see the success of 7R and it's fluid battle system and then try once again to re-invent the wheel, every time that's been attempted before has fallen flat on it's face.

We'll see though, there's still a year till release so anything could change.

Very interested. This franchise was in need of a good shakeup.

Honestly, the overall look is vastly different and I think Yoshi and his team will make this a good one. Turn based is dated, and is better served for niche franchises or Dragon Quest. It doesn't look like it'll be turn based, but action al-a FF7R and honestly I'm fine with that. Since we could still get temp party members controlled by AI.

On a personal note, I'm tired of Nomura era FF. He's not a bad dude, but his creativity peaked in FF7-8 and it just kept getting weirder with each title. Maybe it's the psuedo-scifi-modern era that overstayed it's welcome. Would be nice if they revisit the steampunk era from FF6 but perhaps we're due for a dark fantasy FF.

while i am apprehensive about the lack of a party shown thus far (not sure why they would need clives name in the UI if hes the only party member tho) the game looks solid.
If the older FFs are a loveletter to D&D, I am not opposed to this solo campaign.

Very interested, but I don't have that kind of money to throw around for a console. I'll probably just watch streamers play it and/or youtube cutscene compilations when they are released.

one of the enemies in the trailer was "orcish mesmer" so theyre doing something with them
