Genre actually does matter. You really can't compare anything to an MMO because it's such a massive undertaking and constantly evolving work.

It's easy for an FPS to have perceived longevity because there's a modding community that forms around it and can keep things interesting. It's such light work. Devs for those games get to spend some time on one version, maybe throwing a patch or two for stability. Then it's on to the next version with prettier graphics and a different storyline.
hmm yes a game that has recieved little and i do mean very little development basically just bug fixes, for years and yet still remains extremely popular. is in no way shape or form a good thing to bring up for content being hard to make thats long lasting. and as i stated already earlier on, the BASE GAME was still popular as well til the bot infestation.

you can't sit here and dismiss a game that "should've been eaten through in like a month and ditched for the next big thing" being popular with little dev support for years. the point was as long as the game is FUN and ENGAGING it'll have staying power once again REGARDLESS of the game genre.
