NFT stands for Non-Fungible Token, and basically, NFTs use blockchain, the technology that makes cryptocurrency possible, to verify a digital asset. That way someone has the real/legitimate XYZ. So say someone created a hugely popular meme, they could try to make an NFT and sell it to make money. The buyer presumably wants to own a piece of internet history, or maybe they think since they now own it they can make money on merchandising it or whatnot since they are now the owner of it.

In terms of gaming, I think the concern is the pay-to-win scenario. I see the most natural fit with the mobile/freemium games. The card/character collecting games could probably easily add in a tier of NFT based cards/characters which they would sell for a very high amount of money. As for XIV, I'm guessing the most logical/least offensive application would be to make unique glamour that only one person or perhaps a handful could own. Which brings us to another point of NFTs there is usually only one of or a very few of any given NFT. No point in making something an NFT if their are unlimited copies of it available.
