Never understood why people use steam for ffxiv to begin with. Not only is it totally unneeded, but FFXIV gets less money because Steam takes a cut.

Convenience mostly. I've used Steam as my primary digital marketplace for 16 years now. Steams store is much more reliable than SE's as well; Every time an expansion comes out, my friends who play through SE are always in a tizzy waiting for emails with keys and trying to register them. I've even had a friend miss out on early-access because of some obscure problem with the SE storefront that needed support intervention. SE's store also notoriously doesn't play nice with certain browser setups, and I constantly have to advise people to try switching browsers to get it to work. SE store also used to use Scalefast (maybe still does) which gives people A LOT of problems.
Meanwhile on Steam, you just get your key and stuff the instant you order the game, directly in the Steam UI.
This is my absolute last concern when buying a product.
Edit:
Adding though that I'm wholly supportive of the game license being genericized. No one should ever feel bound to a third-party platform.

Because Steam supports my payment solution which I can use to buy gametime. To this day mogstation still doesn't support my pay solution. I do have visa now but 8 years ago I didn't.
Been using Steam since 2007.
All my games are on it. I don't buy/play games which are not available on Steam.
Only exception is Blizzard games but I've been with Blizzard and WoW long before I even started Steam so.
I like to support Valve. I'm also a member of our Lord GabeN cult.
Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IX Q&A Summary (10/30/2013)
Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.
"I always used steam so forcing us to launch the game with steam doesnt affect me"
Lo and behold, steam is currently having an issue that won't allow steam users to login.
What an awful implementation idea this was.

I was trying to find a thread after the linking accounts and see if was possible play my account in the steam deck, but it's not possible I suppose. Even buying everything again. What a crap policy.
If you have a steam license you can play on the Steam Deck by getting the Proton Experimental branch. However, if you have the Windows license, you could play by installing windows instead of SteamOS. Sadly those are the only options

It does suck that Windows players are also locked out of using the Steam Deck. I would be nice to see this change.
Steam players have been shouting from the roof top for years and the downside to Windows and Steam being locked out of each other just keeps stacking up.
We've received zero response about any of this, and I think we can all agree some kind of response as to WHY we can't have these things isn't a big ask.
I'm able to play on steam deck. After a few tries, new downloads and a lot of research on YouTube, it's working like a charm. I'm really impressed how is good tbh.
Non-Steam licenses work on the Deck just fine. You can install apps and games outside of Steam on them and run with WINE instead of Proton.
