R.I.P samurai main 2022 - REAPER TIME!
I'm disappointed. I was hoping this was another Titanman thread.![]()
Not being an asshole should be common sense and not something people are incapable of until they've been surrounded by LGBTQ+ people that spent their time proving that they are, in fact, normal and nice people (or occasionally assholes because they can be found everywhere). That fear is somewhat understandable.
But I think it is a double edged sword.
Because if you just stay in your own group of people and don't really interact with these maybe transphobic people, then they don't know that these kind of "jokes" actually hurt the feeling's of other's.
They will not know that LGBTQ+ people can just be as nice as everyone else.
Not having heard of something or not being familiar with the details, not knowing what certain words imply that are commonly used etc. are all fine - I don't think it's anyone's responsibility to read up on all the details and being ignorant about something isn't bad as long as they're open to corrections.
But saying things like someone just needs to get laid properly if they heard someone is ace or asking if they could watch next time when they heard someone is lesbian and similar popular punchlines are crossing lines and should be common sense to avoid because if it was the other way around they wouldn't like to hear it either.
Try telling a straight gamer dude that he's not really straight and make a crude joke about how he just needs to get slapped in his face with a proper d*ck and see how well that goes.
LGBTQ+ people don't have to prove that they should be treated with like human beings. But gaming culture has always been on the more crude side of things when it comes to jokes and many gaming communites, including the more inclusive FFXIV community, have a hard time just accepting that people are different from them and that some things they never dealt with may be hurtful to them. So it's understandable that people would rather stick to people they already know have a certain understanding about them in a videogame they play to have fun and relax.
Mentioning that a community is LGBTQ+ friendly doesn't hurt anyone and it shows that they are at the very least aware that these people exist and may prefer to be surrounded by people that are either in a similar situation or understanding of it and a bit more mindful with their language because they know from their own or other people's experience that some things hurt. And that being hurt by crude jokes that have probably followed them all their life doesn't make them a "snowflake".

To be honest Iike the self tagging. Let's me know what FCs to avoid. They are also usually hotbeds of drama, and not the fun kind.

Always been pointlessly redundant to me. Its really just people trying REALLY hard to sell whatever group they're selling, lets not kid ourselves. Its already in the ToS, thats all you need. Oh is there actually a hateful group out there? Report 'em, done. I always assume it goes without saying that a group of any kind in this game is going to be LGBTQ+ friendly and after years of playing, thats exactly how its been.
Seriously how does reporting the FC you're trying to join suddenly get you into an FC you're comfortable being in? How does reporting solve anything? The point is to avoid having to go through potential hassle and harassment in the first place. Would you even want to stay in a FC with other members who you had to report? Or would the other members even want you there after? Probably not. So back to square 1 looking for an FC that will just welcome you, if only there was some way to know before hand...Always been pointlessly redundant to me. Its really just people trying REALLY hard to sell whatever group they're selling, lets not kid ourselves. Its already in the ToS, thats all you need. Oh is there actually a hateful group out there? in my books, it's in the same category in context of fc ads as "we are helpful and friendly!" or "we have house/we are totally gonna buy mansion from empyreum!" or "sometimes we even run content together/have treasure map night!": tags and extra to make your fc spam ad pop.
how accurate any of those claims are is anyone's guess.
i am GSRM individual myself and i enjoy peace of private fc/s with irl friends after getting fed up with pettiness and drama of your average FCs, queer friendly or not, long time age. groups for whatever random activity from raids to mountfarms to maps can be found from discord and i prefer it that way.
fc (and disco/nightclub) advertisers i blacklist, got no need to see that.

What I don’t get is why some people feel the need to broadcast your orientation to the world. If it comes up organically in a conversation then so be it. It’s weird and cringy otherwise.
I mean I do think it's redundant, but it is kind of an indicator of the kind of community those FCs are trying to foster. Fair enough I think. Like 99% of FCs in general are welcoming of people of all kinds, but those who advertise that they are LGBTQ+ friendly are (intentionally or not) letting people know what that community is going to be like.

It depends on the culture the group is being formed in, the goal of the group, the scope of activities the group will be involved in, and the size of the community being fostered. This might be common sense, but if a group is doing something like savage raiding than ones sexual orientation is kind of redundant. Honestly, I'm still perplexed as to how the heck LGBTQ has anything to do with... well, anything involving what people do in this game. LGBTQ does not necessarily indicate anything about someones personality, and the only thing I can think of is trying to assure people who have suffered extreme abuse for their choices that they wont be criticized.
The only group that probably has an active concern over the subject would be roleplaying groups from a practical standpoint.
