What do you have against single parent families?!
Also we been knew Hermes was a depressed sociopath.

The whole point of going to Elpis was that the Ancients are just.....people. For all their power and longevity, they're just flawed humans like anyone else.
https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodes.../#sidestory_07Genuine question here, but what would they need to retcon to make that the case? Is it explicitly stated anywhere that the genius scientist Lahabrea everyone seemed to love is the same Lahabrea we kicked into dust in Prae? There is a time gap between Elpis and the Final Days.
Dunno, Eric seems to be more well-known for... chain magics so far, while Bad Dad Lahabread was the genius at creating concepts. In any case, I'm already expecting some kind of cheesy dad/son reconciliation and something that really makes such an impression on not-Elidibus that he still remembers it 12k+ years later.I closed my eyes, letting out a measured breath, or what passed for one in the emptiness of the rift. He was right, of course. Lahabrea's boldness had only grown with the passing of ages─segueing inevitably into recklessness. Across many vessels and many worlds he blazed his trail, each mad leap forward leaving him that much more broken. Not satisfied with having brought about the Seventh Umbral Calamity, he labored needlessly to prolong it.
Was it his affinity for concepts of flame that made him so like the fire itself? From peerless Ifrita to that hopelessly immortal bird, his creations had burned bright and beautiful─as did he.
He should have known what becomes of the flame once all else is ash.
Unless they subvert all expectations and everything I'm thinking of is upside-down! But that'll take at least a year or so to materialize.

But I don't think what happened in Elpis explains Emet's aspirational description of the ancient world in 5.0, and the phantoms that WoL met in the Tempest who had qualities that humans didn't.
It's a notion of well... relative "perfection". Things were relatively (albeit, I'd say, significantly, demonstrably) more idyllic in their world, but they are not entirely non-human entities... rather, they share human emotions and traits and some concerns and insecurities, which is showcased in Elpis and even as far back as Amaurot.
I thought this quest (Touring Anagnorisis Part 2) captured their complex natures well in the sort of responses you can give on them:
They possess both human and more-than-human traits, as far as I am concerned - overall, I found them very intriguing and appealing as far as fantasy races go.

When the game's story becomes self-aware:
This
In regards to Lahabrea, it's possible Eric could have some talent in creation not displayed yet but the thing that triggers "it's probably Dad" for me is that Lahabrea always seemed to have a particular hatred for us. If we get Eric killed, then that could certainly explain it.
Wow it's almost like realized utopias in fiction never hold up if you scratch the surface and reveal a barrage of ignored and mundane problems. The ancient's society was powerful but it's very obvious that emet selch was portraying it through incredibily rose tinted glasses.
Lahabrea was also batshit insane by the modern era from thousands of years of body-surfing.
