Technically the Primals in post ARR filled the same role. In an effort to cutdown post game msq length they made the decision to move trials out of the MSQ. If they continued with the ARR model, the MSQ would keep stopping to go deal with the Warring Triad/Auspices/weapons, much like ARR would often advance the city states story and then stop and shift over to a primal. There were at least two storylines going on in ARR.
If anything, Hildebrand had our three trial series in ARR. They just didn't get Extreme versions.
