It’s problematic because it arbitrarily enforces socially constructed gender roles, which isn’t exactly a politically neutral perspective for Square Enix to have been perpetuating either.

Many men wear “feminine” clothing and many women wear “masculine” clothing, and that’s not even taking into account the varied aesthetic preferences of non-binary people; to enforce divisions in aesthetic choice in a fantasy video game is arbitrary and outdated.

There are plenty of perfectly legit arguments against gender locking, we don't need the Twitter nonsense brought into it.

What apparent Twitter nonsense? Which parts of what I wrote do you disagree with and why?

Id really like them to address the gender-locked hairstyles since it seems like minimal work. Perhaps call it a "volume 2" of the style brochure and have it unlock the opposite gender's version of the hairstyle.

As a workaround if you really need the space, you can hire an extra retainer for a single month (or half-month even, if you time it right) and put your unused gear in their storage, then let it lapse.

Given a choice between having to do it right now for both genders (x 2) or putting half the work off until they have time for it later, "doing it all now" is not the option that saves time in their schedule now.

I'm just glad they're doing the more recent seasonal items as separate items to begin with, and not locking themselves into two designs on the one item like they did with the Endless Summer set.

Did you just say minimal work when the hair situation is as it is with viera and hrotghar?

Different level of work. They obviously have a different problem with fitting hair to those races versus standard races.

But for genders? If they've sized it to male X then it should be ready to go on female X in most cases, including Viera if the style is available to them. It's already been modified for whatever weird ears or head shape the race has, and can presumably be shifted over quickly.

    Gender-locking stuff sucks.

I know it's done to create variety but having a gender be able to wear a specific pair of shorts (to use something random) while the other gender either can't or gets a transformed version of the item... is lame.

I've said it before but, in a game in which a character can be any class/job regardless of gender or race... Not being able to wear that hypothetical pair of shorts... Really comes across as silly. I'm not saying that it is. The devs may well have their reasons and design philosophy for doing it the way it is right now but to me, it just feels off.

You may well be the tiniest lalafell being able to take an axe at Titan but so god help you if you try to wear X or Y article of gender-locked clothing.

But if they are unlocking "on their free time" are they really have such high schedule? which item gets priority on getting unlocked and why? what is stopping them from making new stuff already gender free when they actually free time? Lack of communication? weird direction? a paissa? neither you or I know.

Your argument ends with maybe hrothgar, the effort needed to make hair for viera ( whose head shape is pretty much in line with miqote ) regardless of gender is about the same as chucking male hair on female or vice versa, and no the ears aren't really a factor in this at all, the hair just needs to go high enough so there is no gap, but the viera ears go lower than the actual top of the hair anyway, and yeah modders have done various hairs from one race to another so it can be done relatively quickly but you see the way Square Enix does things is hardly quick. It's pretty much the exact same situation: extra work, nothing easier about it.

I would like to add that even among the female races there's varying head shapes, so going between genders increases that.
