I've noticed that better gear makes a lot bigger difference now. Make sure to pick up as much craftmanship/magic craftsmanship/control as you can, maybe have a separate set of craftsmanship and magic craftmanship and use trial and error to figure out what stat each recipe uses and gear specifically for that. Food also seems to help quite a bit, at level 38 Alchemist 12 more Craftsmanship from food makes a bigger difference than you'd imagine.
Also, if you're trying to go for higher quality for bonus XP getting the base stats your tool needs (STR/VIT/INT etc) helps you get more quality per action.
