How does this game compare to FFXI ?

I am new to FFXIV and I am enjoying the game, but having never played FFXI - I am curious about it now. Would it be worthwhile for me to check it out now ?

I remember playing Everquest 2 for the first time and getting the same curiosity over EQ1, although I regret trying EQ1 as the game was pretty miserable in comparison. Is FFXI like going back to the stone-age in comparison to this, as EQ1 is to EQ2?

It's nothing like it, but people here seem to think it's a copy/paste, or at least starting to.

Those people are dumb, and wrong.

    EDIT:
It's hard to say if you'd enjoy FFXI now. It's much slower paced than FFXIV is.

I am admittedly Disfranchised, but in my honest opinion FFXI is Ruined. The Newest Expansion series made the entire first 90% of the game obsolete.

It really is a shame how badly Abyssea distorted that game.

Because so many fresh faces were showing up for the old content, amirite?

There's nothing wrong with Abyssea. The only thing the Visions series did was make the game more accessible to new comers and more of a relaxed playground for veterans who did that other 90% for about 9 years.

That said, it's hard to judge XIV right now. It's still between what it used to be and what it will be. Until 2.0 launches, all anyone can say is the new battle system has promise. So as long as dynamic content comes along to make it shine.

Well, I think you guys answered my question - it's much slower paced and most of the content is rendered pointless. Thanks!

it was really a great game 2003 to 2007 but now its just old and dead,i dont recommand trying it now.

though i personally enjoy the slow battle system and the crafting/gathering system and UI more than ff xiv.

Yeah but its not just that.

The game has one of the best plots of all final fantasy titles. It is (was) the most challenging and hardcore final fantasy there is.
Chains of promathia before being nerfed made Dark Souls a child's game. And it was awesome for that.

The game is really old and still looks awesome. All the equipment has certain style to it.

There are a big load of staple characters which you just fall in love with and recognize everywhere. They all have something different to them that makes them stand out. Like the way they phrase what they say, or catch phrases.

Pretty much all the game's quests have rich cutscenes and are really moving.

And back in the day the game was so great it took almost a year to get a character to max level. You'd grow really attached to it.

The whole world feels alive. Everything works according to the world's clock. Be it elemental day, or time of the day. Shops don't open at night and such. Even flowers that glow in the dark!
It feels really alive. People in XIV dislike cumbersome things such as a shop not being open 24/7...

I would say to just stay away, as several others have said, most of the content has been rendered useless, but hey that happens. A major gripe would be that the party system was completely changed after all its years online. If you do play, you don't have much to lose seeing as it won't be a full fee, and if you can get into a good shell, you'll be max probably by the end of next week :P I wish you luck if you do play.

Final Fantasy XI is my favourite FF title. period.
It has a fantastic story, and IMO a great player base of fun people (or did at the time i left in 2010)
The world has excellent art design that is worthy of the franchise across a world so gigantic that it dwarfs the size of any other FF title. The drawback in the day being that progressing to the very top of the power curve takes a long time. Much longer than FFXIV anyway. But the game is epic and has that play it all night charm.
    Get it before its gone.

That written, i believe FFXIV has the higher 'potential ceiling', and have from the start, but the real date of note for this game is September. Playing it before then is really just preparation for what is to come and some preview content to enjoy as 2.0 begins to land.

My suggestion is, if you really are interested in FFXI, it is a masterpiece and you'd best get it now before its gone, and before FFXIV reaches 2.0.
